Logan (Chosen Champions #1) - Macy Blake Page 0,31
Or anything else-able, for that matter.
But here was this incredibly hot guy, who had an incredibly sexy job, who kept flirting with Bailey like he was the best thing since sliced bread—or since soup, because from the noises Logan made as he ate, he really, really liked soup.
It was great soup, though. So there was that.
After they finished eating, Logan insisted on paying. Bailey tried to protest, but he lost the argument. They were back in the SUV and on their way to his place when he realized he might have just had a date with Logan.
“No,” Logan said.
“What?”
“That wasn’t a date.”
Bailey sputtered. “How did—what—I don’t…”
Logan laughed and pulled into the driveway behind Bailey’s car. They both got out, and then Logan stopped by the car and opened the driver’s door. He fished Bailey’s keys from under the seat and held them out.
Bailey already had his hand buried in the outer pocket of his backpack looking for them. He was so distracted. His cheeks heated as he reached out and took the filled keyring from Logan’s hand. Their fingers brushed together, and it shouldn’t have been anything. Bailey had touched a thousand people in his lifetime. Okay, maybe not a thousand, but a lot, and he’d never once felt the touch all the way to his toes.
He pretended he hadn’t felt a thing, though, and moved toward the door. “Please thank Aleron for bringing my car back to my place for me.”
“I will,” Logan said as he followed Bailey upstairs, then proceeded to carefully search the entire apartment.
After the closet was deemed safe, Bailey grabbed his gym bag from the bottom of the closet and tried to decide what to pack. Will and Joey would want him to stay with them. It was the smart thing to do.
The thing was, he didn’t want to pack. He didn’t want to go stay with Will and Joey. They had nothing but frozen pizza in their fridge and barely anything to cook with, even if they had food. He hated not being in his own bed and rarely slept well outside his own space. And since he cooked when he was stressed and his own freezer was a little bare at the moment, he’d planned on using his time off to make a few big batches of stuff. He wanted to cook away his stress.
“What are you thinking that has you so anxious?” Logan asked softly.
“Do you think… never mind.”
“Tell me.”
“I want to stay here. Do you think it’s safe? I mean, I won’t go anywhere by myself, and the windows in this place are ancient, so the moment somebody tries to open one, it would wake the entire neighborhood. And I figured out a way to use my broom handle to block the door, so… yeah. I don’t want to go.”
Logan leaned against the doorway and crossed his arms over his chest. He appeared to be thinking it over. Bailey tossed the bag back into his closet, then shut the door. He wasn’t actually asking for permission, and the stubborn part of him wanted to put his foot down. The part of him that wasn’t a giant asshole realized he was being an idiot.
Bailey sank down on the edge of the mattress and put his head in his hands. Logan moved closer, then sat down beside him. “You’ve lived alone for a long time, right?”
Bailey nodded.
“So you already know it’s a risk. You think maybe you’re just reacting to the fact that your best friend almost got raped last night?”
The word sent a ball of anxiety flowing through him. “We were right there,” Bailey confessed. “She was only gone for a minute.”
“I know. And that’s what has you freaking out about being alone now. But it’s your decision. We can make sure we take as many precautions as we can, but if you really want to stay in your own place, then you should. There’s no reason to suspect you or your friends are being targeted. I don’t like the idea of you being alone, but I get it.”
“I’m not naive enough to think I’m safe because I’m a guy, but I mean…”
“You’re right. It’s not a guarantee. But if you do what you can to keep yourself safe and keep my number on speed dial, well… I think you’ll be fine.”
“On speed dial, huh? You want hourly check-ins? You know, just to hear the sultry sound of my voice.”
Logan laughed and bumped their shoulders together. “Don’t tempt me. Now, you look
