to see my Pops. You can forget it.”

“What? No. Don’t you know?” he asks, sweat building on his top lip.

“Know what?”

“It’s Violet. I just got a call from a friend of mine at the hospital. He remembered the members we had here, and she kept asking people to take her to Kansas. It’s bad, man. They got into a really bad car accident.”

“What?” I choke and force myself to stand on shaking legs. “No, she was on her way here. She was only going to pick up her sisters.”

“I don’t know the whole story. All I know is that Violet, Victoria, and Veronica are all in the hospital and according to my friend, it isn’t looking good.”

“No.” I run my fingers through my hair and stumble, slamming my leg against the coffee table. “No, she’s fine. She has to be okay.”

“Prez is waiting in the truck for you. We will follow behind. You aren’t going to be alone.”

A hundred thoughts run through my mind as I think about Violet. I’m panicked, I’m scared, and I’m in a daze. I need to be more put together than this. She needs me.

I walk out of the room, not looking where I’m going, but my boots take me there. Pulse is next to me and the other guys are behind us. Everything is numb. I can’t think. She has to be okay. I haven’t told her I loved her yet. I said I was falling in love with her, but I haven’t said the words because I was waiting for the right time.

That’s my problem. I’ve realized there is no such thing as the right time. It’s only now. The present.

And I might have lost my chance.

“Amos—” Carson calls my name right as I get to the truck.

“Not now,” Pulse says, holding his hand out to tell him to stop where he is.

“Amos, I need to talk to you.”

I slam the passenger side door shut and stomp my way forward, trying to hide the emotion brimming my eyes as I think about Violet. I wrap my hand around his throat and squeeze. “I need to go. I have more important things to do than talk to you about Pops. I’m going to the hospital. I’ll be back.” I release his neck and spin around, leaving him gasping for air.

Opening the door again, I climb in, and Carson runs up to the side of the truck. “Are you okay? What’s going on?” he asks.

“My girlfriend was in a bad car accident. I’m not going to see Pops, so you can stop holding your breath. Prez, let’s go.”

When everyone is piled into the car, Prez reverses out of the parking lot, and Carson is left standing in front of the clubhouse alone. His hands are laced together on the top of his head as he watches us leave.

“I’m so sorry, Kansas,” Scarlett mutters from beside me. She’s sitting in the middle so she can be next to Boomer. “This has been an emotional day.” Her hand slides into mine and squeezes. I hold onto her, not wanting to lose the connection just yet. It’s like having my sister or Mom hold me. The simple touch is keeping me from completely losing it, and I hope Prez doesn’t mind.

“Pulse, have you heard anything else while we’ve been driving?”

“No, I’m checking my phone but there is a video of the accident trending on Facebook,” he says.

“What!” I roar in pure rage. “Let me fucking see.”

“I don’t think you want to,” Satyr says, eyes on Pulse’s phone screen, and he winces right as I hear the sound of metal hit metal.

I turn as much as the seat allows me and snatch the phone out of Pulse’s hands. I refresh the video and wait. It’s taken from a car, and right now it’s just of someone recording them and their significant other sharing a kiss. When they break apart, that’s when I see Scarlett’s car drive through the light and a black SUV slam against the driver’s side.

“No!” I scream at the screen until my voice breaks, gasping in horror as my worst nightmares come true. “No, please.”

A tear falls, blurring the video. Violet’s car slides across the pavement. Sparks fly.

And then it begins to flip.

My stomach turns when I see a quick glimpse of Violet in the driver’s seat. I hold a hand over my mouth when they smash against a pole, the one thing that stops the momentum of the car from flipping more. Smoke comes from
