goes again.”
Lucy yelled when she felt the baby again.
She took her hand away and put it to Olivia’s stomach.
“Hey, brother or sister,” Lucy said. “Kick me. It’s the only chance you get to do it for free. Because if you kick me when you’re born, I will tattle on you.”
Olivia laughed.
“At least she’s honest,” I said.
Lucy then let out a yell and jumped back. “The baby kicked!”
“See?” Olivia asked.
“Wow, that’s so weird. I’m going to go play now.”
Lucy hurried back upstairs.
I smiled at Olivia. “Still busy around here?”
“All the time,” Olivia said. “The questions never end. I love how curious she is though. But… what’s going on with you?”
“Nothing. Silas was with Buddy. Guitar lessons.”
“Right,” Olivia said. “Do you have any idea who he wants to sing to?”
“Nope. I’m hoping it’s something romantic. Then again, knowing the old men of this town, he’ll probably try flirting with a woman our age.”
“Can you imagine?” Olivia asked.
“It was nice seeing Silas do something with his guitar,” I said. “I mean, like he had a purpose. I know he’s getting a studio built for us. I can’t wait for that. The two of us will be able to write songs together. Can you imagine?”
“I think that’s amazing,” Olivia said.
“Yeah.”
“Yeah… that didn’t sound too confident.”
“No, it is. I just… I feel bad in a way. That he’s not playing shows.”
“Silas? Does he want to play shows?”
“He didn’t say anything.”
“But you think so.”
“Yeah,” I said. “I mean, that’s what he’s always done. Now he’s not because of me. Because of the baby.”
“The baby he put there,” Olivia said.
“Yeah. But he should have his thing too. I mean, he’s doing so much here. For me. For us. The house. It’s… I want to make sure everything is balanced. Okay? We both need to be happy.”
“I agree,” Olivia said. “You should talk to him about it. Tell him. Kick him out and tell him go play a show. I’m sure you two will figure it out. There’s a lot going on at once here.”
I touched my stomach. “Yeah, there is.”
Olivia touched her stomach. “Goddamn Justa family…”
“Hey, that’s me too,” I said.
“Oh, I know,” Olivia said. “You just couldn’t keep your legs closed near that rock star, could you?”
I smiled. “Or maybe I just pursued him… since I am a goddamn Justa.”
We both started to laugh.
And both babies kicked at the same time.
Chapter Thirty
SILAS
The guitar lessons with Buddy continued. When I wasn’t playing guitar with him, I was poking around the house, offering to help Tyler until he gave me a quick look which was my warning to stay away. I helped around the restaurant when possible. Anything and everything except serving food to customers.
Every other second of my time was kept for Mila.
Studying her body, along with memorizing it. Knowing that things would keep changing, probably for the rest of our lives. I caught her becoming more comfortable with herself, which was by far the sexiest thing about her being pregnant. Her standing in front of the bathroom mirror with a toothbrush in her mouth, pulling her hair back and up, naked, made every function in my body forget what to do.
She would look at me and roll her eyes.
But she had no idea what it did to me.
There were more curves to her already perfect body.
Each curve promising that Mila wasn’t just the strongest woman I ever met, but she was going to be an amazing mother. And each time I thought that, it was like a challenge to myself. A reminder - a slap in the face - that I was a father now. The idea that anyone could just pack a bag and leave and act like nothing happened… that was on the table. I swiped that off the table each morning.
I loved her.
Goddamn, I loved Mila more than any word or words could come close to explaining.
I caught myself lost in that thought. Wondering what words would be good enough for Mila.
From the corner of my ear I heard a slight buzz on the strings as Buddy strummed his chords.
I turned my head and nodded.
The old man was definitely practicing his wrinkled ass off. That was for sure.
He stared at his fingers and suddenly froze.
He winced, his mind and fingers completely missing what was next.
