other trailers parked nearby. Big ones. Little ones. Ones with a big door on the back that was open. People were sitting outside in lawn chairs and standing around campfires emitting smoke that danced up into the sky. Kids ran between campsites, screeching in happiness.

Feeling as if she'd stepped into another world, she moved away. She wanted to go back to Speeder's house. She didn't belong here. Avery Falls wasn't her home.

The rumble of a motorcycle startled her. She turned in a panic, only to find Speeder pushing his motorcycle backward with his feet.

She moved forward, intent on stopping him. The throbbing in her chest grew faster.

Speeder dipped his chin as he rode away. Left standing alone, shocked and scared, she tried to figure out how she'd got to the point of being stranded.

She watched Speeder as he went out the exit, retracing the path back to his house. Aware she was alone, she escaped the curious glances coming her way from the campers and sought the safety of the RV.

Inside the trailer, the floor moved under her feet. She grabbed onto the counter. There was a couch, a small table sided by two benches, a kitchen sink, small fridge, and a door at the end that she suspected was the bathroom. Shuffling to the front, she sat on the edge of the couch.

Anxiety made it difficult to breathe. She sat straighter, forcing more air into her lungs. The headache that remained from the accident pounded harder, deeper, in her skull.

Grabbing the strap of her backpack, she brought the bag around and pulled the zipper. She retrieved a handful of cash, thumbing through the stack. Her temples throbbed, and she shoved the money inside with the rest. It appeared as if all the money she remembered was there.

Rationally, she could buy another car. She had more than enough money.

But where would she go?

She panted, feeling the walls of the travel trailer closing in on her. The feeling that she'd be safer at Speeder's house kept growing.

Chapter Five

Trina hopped off the back of his motorcycle and walked in the opposite direction of the clubhouse. Speeder toed the kickstand, having no other choice but to bring Trina with him after her school suspension.

"Hey," he shouted, stopping Trina's escape. "Where are you going?"

She slid her cell in her back pocket. "I'm meeting Zach and Kenny at the bridge."

"Meet them and come straight back."

His daughter nodded, backing away from him. He motioned his chin for her to go. She always went to the Friday night get-together for the locals at the clubhouse. Knowing Trip and Bonnie would have the boys attend, he let her go to meet her friends despite getting in trouble at the school.

A cadenced pounding echoed in the air, bouncing off the tall mountain ranges surrounding him. He walked toward the reason for the noise. Trip and Keenan used a sledgehammer against the top of a six-inch round steel post in a rapid, rhythmic motion.

"What's that for?" he asked, a hundred paces away from them.

Trip stopped in mid-swing, enhanced to hear what normal people couldn't. "We're putting up a fence with a gate."

He walked over to them, wanting to keep their conversation away from the locals. "Why does Prez want to enclose the clubhouse?"

There was always a purpose to every action of the Avery Falls Motorcycle Club. Meetings were held weekly to inform each member in different phases of the Alpha Bio Project of what was going on. Followed by town business and the announcement of the various jobs for each member in town.

But if something had to do with the motorcycle club, the originals met alone to make decisions. He hadn't heard about constructing a fence.

"It's not Prez's idea." Trip brought the sledgehammer back and hit the post, driving it several inches into the hard, rocky ground. "I've decided the club needs more protection."

He glanced at Keenan, who shook his head to agreeā€”he wasn't in the know. Being closest to Trip during the years they were brought to the Bitterroot Mountains and put through the project, Speeder studied his MC brother. Since retiring from the program and falling in love, Trip had distanced himself from the club.

Trip remained active and participated in the meetings, but he no longer worked in the cave or with the training of the other men. That difference in their lifestyle put a distance between them they haven't dealt with yet.

"Protection? What can come at us that we can't handle?" he asked.

After several more swings, Trip
