“I heard you call Faust an asshole to his face, and you aren’t dead yet. Call me curious. We’d protect you no matter what, but you have mad prison cred for mouthing off to Faust. No one does that here. We all have our little ways to annoy him, but never directly like that.”

“I guess. Thanks for not shanking me in the shower. Do I want to know what you did to Venus?”

“She got gang piled by a bunch of foxes in the laundry room after everyone left. She’s probably in medical now. She’s not going to rat us out to the other witches because everyone here knows Astrid gave her an order to leave it. Whatever her plan is, she can’t make an enemy of her own kind in here. That’s a death sentence here. Most everyone else isn’t going to take her up on it if they ask because everyone likes Astrid. A Vampire might if she offers to become their donor, but only if they take a test sip and like it enough to piss off Astrid.”

I nodded.

“Glad to hear a Vampire will kill me for tasty prison blood.”

“The Vampires have it pretty shitty in here if they haven’t found a donor. They don’t even give them bagged human blood. They get stale pig’s blood from a slaughterhouse, and I’ve been told it’s chunky.”

“Ew.”

“Yeah, the Vampires here are desperate for donors, and many people take them up on it because their bite is erotic, and they are fiercely protective of people they feed on.”

“Venus thinks Vampires are filthy bottom feeders and should all be exterminated.”

Whisper just laughed.

“Get dressed if you want to eat. If the Vampires find that out, she’s as good as dead. They hate racists. I take it you’re sitting with Dakarys and Rajack again?”

“I like them.”

“We’ve all seen them naked. We know exactly why you like them. Plus, they can get good shit. Can you tell them we are running low on that special tea, and we haven’t gotten our panty order yet?”

I held up my hand.

“Hold up, you mean there’s another option besides these panties that come up to my armpits and the bra that digs everywhere?”

Whisper just winked at me.

“Talk to your new friends, sugar tits. They’ll hook you up.”

I hadn’t asked them for anything. The foxes had been kind to me and got Venus out of my hair for a little while. I could pass the message to my new friends.

And I wanted better panties.

Chapter 29

Rajack

ei was late to breakfast, and Venus wasn’t with the witches. In fact, none of the witches had come to the mess hall. Venus tried to take Rei on in the showers, and it worried us the entire coven had taken Astrid out and gone to her bathroom to hurt Rei. The only thing that was stopping us from hunting down every witch in this prison was that we knew Wren. Wren said she was handling things, and Astrid had a plan.

Rei had already complained about the early morning hours here, and the witches could be off dealing with Venus in their own damned bathroom. It didn’t mean we weren’t stressing. We were just about to find Rei when she showed up with a big smile and not a single mark on her.

I couldn’t help it. I pulled her into an enormous hug. We were not at the huggy point of this relationship, but I couldn’t help it. Dakarys and I swore to protect her, and it had now become way more than just needing her to get out of her. She was cool, and we liked her. It would have been miserable trying to work this out if she had been this awful bitch like Venus.

Rei wrapped her arms around my waist and hugged me back. She just felt so lovely there.

“What was that for?” she asked.

“You were late, and there’s not a single witch in the mess hall. It worried us.”

“They might be in medical with Venus,” she said with a little shrug.

“Your doing?”

“She asked one of the foxes to stick a shank in my gut in the shower. They think I’m like them, and they thought it was rude to ask. They beat her in the laundry room.”

“Score one for the foxes,” Dakarys said.

“I have a message from Whisper and a request.”

“Whisper gets bonus
