get all emotional now,” he laughed. “Come on, let’s all go grab a latte together. Will be nice to actually sit with you instead of pretending not to know you.”
Brenna threw one arm around the shoulders of each of them as they walked out into the living room.
“Guys, coffee shop, let’s go,” Jerrik called to everyone.
“Sounds good!” Colby said as he reached for his jacket.
“I think we’ll stay here,” Leif said. He looked over at Norna, who had fallen asleep on the floor beside the lightly snoring dragon. “She looks too comfortable to move. Besides, I’m not sure leaving a dragon alone in the apartment is the best idea. I’m going to be pissed at both of you if she ends up wanting a dragon of her own now, though.”
Erik laughed as he gave Leif a pat on the back and walked over to the elevator to join the others.
The coffee shop was bustling, and the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans hung in the air like a delicious haze. The shop looked like it was under some sort of redesigning, and there were a few new employees hanging tiny turquoise, twinkling lights behind the espresso bar. After they had placed their orders, the five of them went to find a seat.
“Just like old times again,” Erik smiled.
“Yeah, it is,” Jerrik said as he looked around at his friends. “To think we nearly all killed each other at the beginning.”
Brandt laughed. “I wouldn’t necessarily go that far.”
“No, he’s kind of right,” Colby chuckled.
“Well, now we are all friends and all together,” Brenna said happily. “And we can enjoy the city without anything else weird happening for a while.”
“Here are your lattes,” the barista said as she set the steaming drinks down on the table in front of them.
She looked familiar to Brenna, but she was sure that she had never seen her before. She didn’t have on a name tag, but it wouldn’t have mattered. Brenna was horrible with names and much better at remembering the subtle details of faces.
“I brought you a lavender one,” she said as she set Brenna’s latte down in front of her.
“Thank you, that’s actually my favorite drink. I didn’t order it this time because I didn’t see it on the menu.”
“No problem. Yeah, the menu is changing because the shop is under new ownership.”
“I like what you’re doing with the lighting,” Brenna smiled.
“Thanks, me too. That part was actually my idea. The lights reminded me of dragon scales.”
Everyone at the table stopped and looked at each other.
When the barista had set the last coffee cup down, she turned to walk away.
“Excuse me,” Brenna called after her. “Sorry to be nosy, but you look kind of familiar to me. What is your name?”
The barista smiled, and Brenna thought she noticed a spark of recognition in her eyes. “I’ve been called by many names.”
