Hot Neighbor (Hot Billionaire Daddies #8) - Suzanne Hart Page 0,90

and always wore makeup, the only thing I adorned myself with was foundation to cover my freckles. Even eyeliner was a farfetched idea in my mind.

“It’s a lovely color, suits you.”

She was happy with that. She knew I never paid empty compliments. I wouldn’t have said anything if I didn’t genuinely think her dress was nice.

“Well, wish me luck too. If that boy doesn’t make a move tonight, I’m seriously going to give up.”

Unlike most other guys who were always asking Karen out, Jake was a stone wall she was repeatedly banging herself against. Even I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. He was single, straight, interested in spending time with her, but he had yet to admit he ‘liked’ her. It was driving the poor girl crazy.

“You know what my thoughts are on this. You shouldn’t be wasting your time on a guy who doesn’t want to be with you,” I said.

I pushed my back up against the wall and pulled out a book from my bag. Karen rolled her eyes and started getting ready to leave.

“Sometimes, Nina, you just have to put in an effort. It’s part of the chase. I know he wants me, you’re wrong about that, and not everyone is like you. It doesn’t always come easy to everyone to just speak their mind. There could be something else going on with him.”

I shrugged. These were Karen’s choices. If I was in her place, I would have gone out with a guy who showed obvious interest. If my life had taught me anything, it was that most human beings were unreliable anyway. There was no point planning your life around any of them. But Karen wasn’t like me, she wasn’t a lone wolf.

I hadn’t looked at the time for ages. Karen had been gone for some time now. I’d shimmied from a seated-up position against the wall, down to lying on my single bed. I was bundled up amidst my pillows and sheets, deeply engrossed in the book I was reading on Political Theory. All I knew was that it was dark outside.

A knock on the door made me jump up.

I looked at my wristwatch. It was close to midnight. It couldn’t be Karen. She had a key. Unless she’d lost it. Was she drunk? Was she okay?

Panicked thoughts rushed through my head as I went to open the door. Instead of Karen, I found him again. He was standing on the other side, with a wide sleazy grin on his face. His hands were stuck deep down in the pockets of his polyester jacket. He was middle-aged and balding.

“What the fuck?” I cursed as a defense mechanism. This was creepy. If I hadn’t been afraid of him before, I was now. What was he doing here? How did he get into the building? Where was security?

“Hello, Nina. I hope I didn’t wake you up. I thought maybe we could talk.”

“Talk about what? I told you I don’t want anything to do with you or your business. Just leave me alone!” I tried slamming the door on him but he blocked it with his foot. Alarm bells went off in my head. He pushed his way into the room with his elbows. His hands were still in his pocket.

“I don’t think you’re really hearing me. Your family owes me money.”

The smile faded from his face now. He glared at me with his beady little dark eyes. I wished our dorm room was better lit. I moved away from him, backing up against my bed. I hoped he couldn’t see how utterly horrified I truly was.

“My family doesn’t owe you any money. Our dad did. He’s dead now. What do you want us to do about it?”

Raina had worked so hard to get us out of the South. To give us a different life than the one we were born in. Our father dying, though devastating for us and tough, was like a chance at a new start.

But here I was, being threatened by a man who used to work with our father.

“I’m sure you know how these things work, Nina. Your dad owed me money. Now he’s dead, but the debt carries forward. You’re in college. You can figure this shit out, right?” He was smiling again. He thought this was funny, threatening a twenty-one-year-old?

“How did you get in here?”

“It doesn’t matter. I’m here now.”

He moved closer to me and I gulped. Could I scream? Would anyone hear me?

I knew there was nobody close by. Everyone was busy partying and getting drunk. If I screamed, it was likely I’d get no help.

“Look, babe, I don’t want to do anything stupid, so don’t tempt me.”

Babe? Was he seriously going to call me that? But it was the least of my problems right now, and I made no comment. Maybe he could see the lingering fear in my eyes, and that was making him act cockier.

“How about I make this easier for you?” His gaze roamed over me, from head to toe. It seemed like he was checking for something.

“You’ll do well at my club.”

“Your club?”

He’d mentioned this before. I didn’t know much about his business, but I had the feeling this was the kind of club I would never find myself in on a night out.

“All you have to do is serve drinks, collect tips…and trust me, you’ll make a lot of tips.” He studied me again, his stare settled on my breasts and he wasn’t about to look away. “You trust me, right?”

How could I answer that question? While he was standing in my dorm, capable of doing actual physical damage.

“I need to think about this.”

He looked up at my face again.

“Good. Yeah, think about it. If you can’t come work for me, you need to figure out some other way to repay the debt. Do you understand?” This last part he said with threatening intensity. “You’ll make a lot of money if you work for me. My clients are very generous.” That grin appeared again. He was pleased with himself and he was making me sick.

“Please leave.”

He shrugged. “Sure, I’ll go, but I need an answer from you soon. Or the money. Figure this shit out, Nina Jones. I’ll go now but I won’t be gone for good.”

He went to the door, turned, and looked at me one last time before he left. I locked the door behind him and sat down on my bed with a thump. A chill ran down my spine. For a moment, I seriously considered taking up his job offer. I needed the money. I needed him off my back. I didn’t want Raina or Corey to find out that our dad’s ghost had come back to haunt us.

What else could I do?

For starters, I needed to leave this dorm and make sure I kept this danger away from Karen.
