could actually make something of it. Was I totally wrong?”
I can feel my lips quivering. How can he say this now? How dare he!
I face him with my eyes swelling. I’m trying to keep calm, but I don’t know how long I’ll be able to do that.
“Erica spoke to me. She told me everything,” I say, and Trevor’s brows furrow.
“Told you what?”
“About all the other women,” I reply, and he breathes in deeply and then releases the air from his lungs. I watch his chest expand. What I wouldn’t give to rest my cheek there.
“Erica is a liar,” he says, interrupting my thoughts.
What am I supposed to believe?
I feel a burning urge to just walk away from him, but I don’t. I need to hear this out.
Trevor fixes his green eyes on me. For a moment, I think he’s going to grab me, pull me to himself, but he doesn’t.
“What did she say exactly?”
“That she has witnessed several other women with you, in your office. Specifically, women you work with and in positions such as mine. Whose companies you have bought.” My lips twist and tighten as I speak. I’m about to say more. Tell him exactly how much this sickens me, but Trevor is shaking his head.
“Did she also tell you how she has literally been stalking me? She showed up at that bar one night, the one near the apartment. Calvin was with me when I sent her on her way. She also showed up at my place with a basket full of strawberry jelly. Anya was excited to make a new friend and Erica happily obliged. Invited herself to the museum.”
“The day I found Anya crying?”
“She was crying because I told Erica to leave. She wanted us to all have pizza together.”
I can see the rage in Trevor’s eyes. He sounds pissed off, but who is he really mad at?
“And more importantly, how the fuck has she witnessed any of these things she claims? She has been my assistant for just a few months. I haven’t merged any companies with female CEOs in that time except yours. You can check my records, I can—”
“I believe you, Trevor,” I interrupt him.
Can’t he see how my heart is soaring? I can barely hide the relief I feel.
I’m shaking my head. “She made it sound so convincing. I was sure you’ve made a fool of me. Then I met Michelle, and I was doubly sure. I thought you were sleeping with Erica, too, emotionally manipulating her because you’re her boss and she is so much younger.”
Trevor takes a step towards me. He puts his hands on my shoulders, and I feel his warmth. I can feel myself melting. I don’t know what the future holds for us, but right now, I just want to be in his arms.
“It’s all bullshit. I never deceived you, Blaire, not for a day. I tried to fight all my feelings for you, somedays it manifested in anger, but it was always there. Pretty much from the day we met.”
I open my mouth to speak. I have to agree. He has to know how I feel, but Trevor keeps talking. Looks like he has a lot to say.
“But there is something I haven’t told you about me. About my life. I should have told you a long time ago. I know we won’t be able to move forward once you know the truth, but I’m not going to keep lying to you.”
And just when I thought I could see a light at the end of the tunnel, it starts fading quickly.
There’s a breeze in the air, and it blows Trevor’s thick hair back. I’m noticing, not for the first time, how similar the color of his hair is to Anya’s. It warms my heart, even though I know he is about to tell me something that will probably break it.
He has his eyes on me. I can see this is difficult for him.
“Anya isn’t mine,” he finally says.
At first, I’m sure I haven’t heard him right. I almost chuckle at the thought of that.
“Trevor! What are you talking about?”
“Nicola was mistaken about the paternity. She was having a bad week the night we…slept together. The only night that we did. There were a few other men. Unfortunately, it was all a blur to her, but I was the only one who stuck out. She wasn’t trying to trap me or anything. Nicola was a good woman. We became good friends.”
