person.

I blink rapidly when I find Trevor standing there across from me. I’m reminded of the old days and nights when he would show up at my door at all odd hours. At first, because he wanted to pick a fight with me, and later because he couldn’t keep his hands off me.

Or so I thought.

“Blaire, sorry, you’re busy,” he says, glancing past me into my apartment. I’m sure he can see hints of a party going on.

“Yeah, kinda, do you need something?” I’m trying to be as cool and detached as possible, but it’s hard not to simply melt at the sight of him. The fact that he is still the most perfect looking man on earth hasn’t changed.

“It’s kind of a big favor, so I don’t want to impose on you. I know things have been…it’s for Anya.”

I gulp. “What about her? Is she okay?”

“She’s fine, she’s sleeping, but I have to go. It’s an emergency. I’ve been trying to reach Rachel but she’s not answering her phone.”

“Probably asleep.”

He nods.

“Anyway, I was going to wake her up and take her with me but I decided to bite the bullet and check with you first.”

We stare at each other in silence. I have been trying, but Trevor has most definitely achieved that cool-detachment I have been aiming for. From the way he’s speaking, an onlooker wouldn’t be able to tell we had something going on in the past.

“I’m sure you have stuff to do, so I should go.”

“No, I’ll watch her. I mean, of course I’ll watch her. She’s asleep, so I’ll go over there and stay with her.”

“And what about your guests?” he asks, and I shake my head.

“They’ll understand. They won’t care. Most of them are going to be falling asleep on my couch pretty soon anyway.”

Trevor is already stepping backward. It didn’t take much convincing.

“Thank you very much, Blaire. Thank you for doing this.” He gives me one quick wave, and after that, he’s gone.

“I have some stuff to do. I’ll be back later!” I call out to my friends and hear a lazy grumble from them as I leave. They’re too caught up in their own stuff to care about where I go.

Trevor has left the door open, so I slip into his apartment. Once inside, I can’t help but take in a deep breath first. Immediately, I’m hit with the scent of him. It seems so familiar. I didn’t realize I missed this so much.

It’s like I’m bearing a big boulder on my shoulders as I walk down the hallway and into the living room. It’s not like I spent a long time around here, but it was enough for me to have some good memories at this place.

The first thing I do is go in and check on Anya. Thankfully, she is fast asleep in her bed, clutching her favorite dinosaur stuffed toy. I haven’t been seeing her, and just looking at her now pulls at my heartstrings. I stand at the door and stare at her for a while. I blow her a kiss and then return to the living room.

I have no idea how long Trevor is going to be gone or what he has gone to do, and I don’t know what I’m going to do to kill the time—but the least I can say is that suddenly, I am very much at peace with myself.

I don’t know when I fell asleep.

I made myself a hot cocoa and sat on the couch and watched TV for a while, and the next thing I know, I sit up with a jerk on the couch and look around, dazed. The clock on the wall says it’s nearly four in the morning!

I must have been asleep for at least three hours.

I pull myself together and go in to check on Anya. She’s still asleep.

I return to the living room and look around, wondering what to do. I don’t think I can go back to sleep now. And then, maybe because it’s so quiet, I hear voices. They’re coming from out in the hallway, outside the door.

I walk to it and look through the peephole.

I see Trevor standing there, and a woman is with him. A woman who is older than me, closer to his age. She’s dressed well, with platinum blond hair and perfectly manicured nails.

They’re standing close together, talking. She throws her head back in a laugh. I have sudden flashbacks of when I caught Stephen at the restaurant with his girlfriend.
