The Hitman's Guide to Tying the Knot Without Getting Shot - Alice Winters Page 0,91

fake. That they had a week to clean shit up or they’d be under arrest.”

“And did they run?” Leland asks.

“I’m… we’re not sure yet since I can’t get ahold of them. I have to hand her over to the police. Do you know how bad this would look if they called the police on us? Why do I let you guys talk me into this shit? Why did I go from being a good man of the law to… this?”

“Because there’s more to the world than laws,” Leland says. “The laws are there for a reason, but sometimes you just have to reach out and decide what’s best for those you’re trying to protect. It doesn’t always make sense at first, but in the end, helping and saving others is what matters. I don’t know if she thinks her parents will get better, or if she’s afraid she’ll go back into child protective services before being thrown back with her mother again, but if we could find someone in her family who could care for her, it would save her so much pain. Her parents know where she is. There’s nothing legally they could do when you made it clear you were watching her and how to contact you if they wanted her back. They just don’t want her back.”

“Have you had any luck finding someone in her family?” Henry asks.

“Not yet,” I admit. “We’ve been thrown into chaos with what’s going on. But hopefully we’ll have something soon.”

“Okay. I’ll help you for a little longer, then we’re taking this to the police.”

“Deal,” I say, but Leland doesn’t say anything which means it’s not as much of a deal for him. But we’ll handle it when we come to it.

“Ooh, gotta rent one of these,” Leland says as he makes a beeline for a golf cart. It’s clear he’s extremely excited about this.

“We don’t even have clubs yet,” I remind him.

Leland shrugs. “I don’t know that we really need them, right? I mean, I’ve used a club before but they’re generally so messy and they leave blood and brain goo everywhere. I have four guns on me, a knife, and a spork. We’ll be alright.”

Oh, someone save me. “No! We need golf clubs to look like we’re golfing! Not for murdering him!”

“Ahhhhhhh. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. I gotchu,” Leland says. “I’ll get the cart, you guys get the weapons of bludgeoning.”

“The thing is,” Henry says as he walks with me, “I just can’t stop myself from wanting to hang around and watch you guys. I think it’s this strange curiosity about what will happen, and I can’t tell if I’ve hit my midlife crisis or if I’m suffering from memory loss.”

“Probably a bit of both, if I’m being honest. And you really do seem to enjoy Leland’s antics.”

“No,” he growls. Actually growls. “I do not.”

“Sure seems like you love it. You literally do whatever he asks and jump at the opportunity to be with him. You’ll be all ‘Hell no, I ain’t helping you. What time and where?’”

Henry stops walking. “Do you want me to keep helping you or not? If you do, you’re going to shut your mouth and just get us some golf clubs.”

“Of course,” I say with a grin as I head off to get some. When the man hears me state that I want three clubs for the three of us, he seems highly confused. Maybe there’s more to this, but I just smile, tell him I have no idea what I’m doing but I’ve watched enough YouTube videos to be an expert, and pay him.

He seems pleased when I tip him and sets us up with what we need before sending us on our way. It doesn’t take long for me to find Leland as he turns the corner too tight, ramming a wheel up on a curb and nearly tipping the whole golf cart over.

He gets it off the curb and squeals to a stop in front of us. “Welcome to Leland’s Lickety-Split Luxurious Lift.”

I pretend I heard none of that as I hold up the golf club bag thingy. Caddie? Is that right? Or is that the person who carries the bags? Whatever. Golf club bag thingy works just fine.

Leland pops the top off one of the clubs and examines it, turning it this way and that. “That will bludgeon quite well, my dear. You’ve done good. Now give Henry a kiss since I’m too far away to receive it.”

“How about I drive?” I ask.

“Um, is
