I smile indulgently at my infant. He’s half human and half Hyrrokin and I’m inordinately proud to see my human’s traits alongside my own reflected in the features of my first born. His skin is a lighter red than my own and he has a shot of black hair on his head. My son is Buri Touchstone the second, named after my father. And one day, he’s going to save the world.

I look over at Hannibal, standing with his own son. Hannibal’s bound died when his offspring was an infant. Hannibal’s own mother helped him raise his offspring. It’s obvious to me that my friend needs a human female too.

“It’s your turn,” I tell him. “You’re next.”

Five years later…

I get cleaned up too and then go get the boys dressed while my bound takes forever to get herself ready. We all meet downstairs and have breakfast together. My sons jabber away and throw food at each other and onto the floor and I look at them with all the love in my heart.

And then we walk to my brother’s house.

I hold my older son’s hand as he walks next to me, then he lets go and skips ahead. Chloe is pushing the stroller. I take it from her and push it myself because she needs some rest. Our second son is named Kai, after Chloe’s father. We honor our elders and our ancestry with the naming of our offspring. Chloe is five months pregnant and this next one is going to be a girl. We haven’t decided yet what to name her.

There’s a ping on my tablet. I check the screen. “Hannibal and his bound are meeting us there, too,” I say.

“Uncle Hannibal is coming to Uncle Aegir’s house?” Buri squeals with delight. He loves it when all the cousins get together.

“Oh good,” my bound says. “I need to talk to Avery anyway. That’s perfect.”

And then we’re there.

And I bang open my brother’s front door, “Aegir, get dressed we’re here,” I shout.
