His Human (The New Neighbors #2) - M.A. Innes Page 0,44
nodding. He quickly pulled out one of our company cards and a pen. “Perfect, thanks.”
With no tentacles on my dick, it was easy to find enough brain cells to write my name on the back and hand it over to Nolan. “That’s the office number. Just tell the dragon that answers the phone it’s a personal call and she’ll put you through.”
Cameron laughed. “The next time I want an extra day off, I’m going to remember this moment.”
“Shh, you tell on me and I’ll make you go back to that crazy woman with the dogs who calls constantly.” Some people were just weird.
He groaned. “Fine, I should know better than to try to win with you.”
Nolan chuckled, looking more relaxed and less ready to orgasm on the spot. “Thanks, I might take you up on that offer.”
“Any time.” Leaning against Maverick, I smiled. “We’re not as outrageous as it seems.”
Nolan scoffed. “Don’t tell me that.”
Cameron laughed again. I just rolled my eyes and shot him a glare. “Stop that. I was trying not to scare him off.”
Giggling, Nolan shook his head. “I’m…I’m shy, but I don’t scare easily.”
Well, well…our little waiter was finding his backbone.
Before I could say anything, he shifted to his professional face and gave us a nod. “Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.”
Then he dropped his voice. “Manager is looking. I’ll be back.”
We all chuckled and straightened. None of us were sure if anyone was going to walk by and check on us, so the tone turned less porn studio fun and more regular date fun.
Glancing over at Cameron, I decided that it was probably time for real conversations again. “You guys got plans this weekend with that group you hang out with?”
Cameron shook his head. “No, but we’re getting together next week. Why, want to come?”
The look on his face said he was trying to not so subtly make a point, but I wasn’t going to try to guess what that was. “Nope, no point in being the only odd couple out with all those bonded mates.”
George shifted and made a point of looking back and forth between us. “Interesting.”
Huh?
Cameron poked him but rolled his eyes, which gave conflicting signals. “Delusions run deep.”
“Indeed.” George seemed to think we were weird, but he seemed to be more willing to change the subject even if it was slightly personal. “How many days a week have you seen one another?”
I had to remind myself personal was better than cryptic.
I shrugged. “Our schedules are lining up pretty good.”
Maverick shifted so he could drape a large tentacle over my lap. “Our relationship is progressing well. The human style of dating has flexibility.”
Huh?
I needed an orgasm and a nap if we were going to have cryptic conversations where I was supposed to be decoding the real meanings.
“That seems to indicate daily interactions.” George’s response meant something to Maverick because he stiffened until he was much more rigid than I was used to.
I poked him. “Don’t do that. It’s creepy.”
Cameron was trying not to laugh, but I ignored him as Maverick went back to his regular consistency. “Thank you.”
“Are you really not following this conversation?” Cameron finally leaned against the table, bracing his elbows by his nearly empty plate.
“What?” They were starting to make me wish I’d ordered dessert when Nolan had come by earlier.
George and Maverick both looked at me, but it was Cameron who finally broke the silence. “Dude, you’re bonding.”
Huh?
My eyes darted between Cameron and George before looking back to Maverick. “Really?”
He shrugged. “I have never been through the process. I have no firsthand knowledge to speak of; however, it is possible.”
It was almost like going to dinner and waking up in Vegas the next morning married.
“You think?” I wasn’t sure what I was thinking or feeling, so I just sat there looking at him.
“I do not know what to think.” The tentacle that had been draped across me hugged me before stroking my leg.
George huffed at Maverick’s vague response. “You immediately wanted a domination-based relationship with him, and now you are seeing him on a daily basis. That is how it has started with all of us. It does not work the same way with humans. If you wish to avert a bonding, you must walk away now.”
“Is that even an option?” Cameron looked around the table as both of the guys shrugged.
Did I even want that to be an option?
Bonding aside, I didn’t want Maverick to walk away, and that seemed
