His Human (The New Neighbors #2) - M.A. Innes Page 0,34
but I like it.”
He chuckled. “Yeah, they seem to be like that.”
Nodding, I leaned back in my chair and didn’t even try to wipe the grin off my face. “He’s sweet in the funniest ways. I like it.”
“It’s not too much?” Cameron raised one eyebrow and made a vague gesture. “I mean, if he were human it would be too fast, right?”
“But he’s not human.” I shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m honestly trying not to analyze it. We talk when there’s a problem, but mostly it’s miscommunications. Like work. He really wishes he could just leave me bubble-wrapped at home and not have to worry, but he realizes I like working and he respects the time and effort I’ve put into the company.”
He’d said something like he was impressed by my effort, but he wished I’d picked something safer.
Safer than plumbing…
Yeah, there wasn’t much I could say to that other than hug him and tell him I’d be careful.
“Yeah, they respect hard work, but they want you to be home more.” Cameron grinned. “George probably still occasionally wishes I would just stay home and hide from the world, but he seems to have accepted that I want to work.”
“He’d carry you around like a baby and do everything for you if you weren’t careful.” I grinned as he laughed. “But, using that as an example, I’m being very careful about how I explain things.”
Maverick would take as much control over my life as I would give him, but so far we’d managed to keep the majority of it in the bedroom…mostly. The bedroom’s sphere of influence extended to the bathroom and anywhere in the house he decided to start feeling me up, and I wasn’t considering his focus on my eating habits controlling.
However, it was only a matter of time before he started doing more research and figuring out other things he wanted to control, but we’d have to tackle that one kinky project at a time.
“So he’s just as bad as George about that kind of stuff?” Cameron was still grinning, but there was something in his expression that said he was leading the conversation somewhere.
“Yep, but like I said, we’re talking and he takes no for an answer. I just have to explain why I’m saying no.” It was a bit like having a discussion with a stubborn kid sometimes. He understood no, but he wanted to hear why first.
“Was he the one who’s been pushing for seeing each other every day?” Cameron’s expression said he was thinking about something, but I wasn’t sure what.
He could worry as much as my mother…there was a reason she trusted his judgment.
“I think it’s about fifty-fifty. All of a sudden we’re talking and it’s just decided.” I’d asked him to stay the first night, and he’d kind of invited himself the second. From there it was just kind of assumed.
Cameron nodded slowly, but I knew he wasn’t really agreeing with anything I’d said.
“How does he feel when you’re apart?”
“Huh?” The question didn’t make sense. “He’s busy when he’s not with me. He’s a cab driver who’s an adrenaline junkie and in his spare time talks with car manufacturers and airplane designers about making them safer. I’m not sure he has any time at all to think about me when we’re apart.”
Well, he’d text occasionally, but they were fabulous at multitasking…something about their brains, according to Maverick.
Cameron scoffed. “Yeah right. Try again.”
“There’s nothing weird. I don’t know what you’re hinting at.” I must have been getting used to Maverick’s straightforwardness because I didn’t like dancing around a topic anymore.
“Never mind.” Cameron held up his hands in a placating gesture. “We still on for dinner tomorrow?”
“Yes.” I wasn’t ready to drop the conversation, but since Cameron was human, I wasn’t willing to push it.
It was a little weird to think of Cameron as human and ignore his behavior…yeah, Maverick was rubbing off on me.
“Maverick seems super excited to meet you guys.” He was probably beyond excited, honestly. He loved the idea that he was meeting my friends and he was very focused on the idea of meeting George in person so he could see what their relationship was like.
“George is oddly excited too.” Cameron’s smile seemed more genuine that time. “With the other couples we’ve met he’s very laid-back, but I think he’s looking forward to this because of our friendship.”
“They see family and relationships differently, so it’s probably something to do with that.” Because I’d never dated a guy who was looking
