His Apprehensive Mate - Brea Alepou Page 0,67
can.”
Kenny breathed in Morgan’s scent. “I was terrified I’d lose you after only just getting you.”
Morgan’s fingers danced along Kenny’s arm. “I was afraid too. I kept telling myself it was okay, that I was happy I got to meet you and be held by you.” Morgan turned in his arms and snuggled closer. “But I wasn’t ready for it to be over. I still wanted to be in your arms.”
Kenny held his mate.
“I love you.”
“And I love you,” Morgan whispered against his chest.
They had decided on Ava’s reward and waited till after her placement test, not wanting to distract her from her studies.
They lingered patiently in the lounge room at the doctor’s office while Ava had her session. She was currently going twice a week. She liked her therapist even if it had taken her a few sessions to be okay talking with her. Because their situation was a little unique with being shifters, Ava couldn’t open fully without outing shifter kind.
They were hoping to get her a shifter therapist in the future, but for now, Ava was good with the one she had. Kenny could already see the slight changes in her. Ava smiled more, and she picked up video games again. Not as much, but she was getting back into loving them. It helped that Dillan was a hyper race car enthusiast because of Ava. Cole even helped Ava re-dye her hair. There was a mess of blue hair dye all over the place, and Kenny had spent the better of five hours cleaning it up. If it hadn’t put a smile on Ava’s face, Kenny would have given Cole a piece of his mind about the mess.
Ava came out of the office, thanking her therapist before she ran over to them.
“How was it?” Morgan asked as he pulled her in for a hug.
Shifters were touchy by nature, that connection settling the beast side of them. It had become their thing to hug as soon as Ava came out of the room. Sometimes Ava needed long moments of them just holding her, and sometimes they were just hugs.
Ava hugged him back, a smile on her face. She made her way over to Kenny and squeezed him hard. He returned the hug, giving her all the love she deserved and then some.
“So, can we have hamburgers for lunch?” Ava asked.
Morgan was all smiles. They hadn’t told Ava of her surprise reward just yet.
“I don’t see why not,” Kenny answered.
They left the small four-office brick building. The cool autumn breeze was steadily growing colder as they got closer to winter. As shifters, it was a little easier for them to ignore the cold, but Ava, on the other hand, shivered and put her hands in the pockets of her purple hoodie.
They piled into the car, and instead of going the normal direction to head home, they headed toward the go-kart center. It was a little ways away from their medium-size town. It didn’t take Ava long to pick up on something being different.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
It was still a surprise even if they told her where they were going. Morgan glanced Kenny’s way, and he nodded.
“You’ve been studying so hard even after taking your test for class placement. We thought you deserved a reward,” Morgan said.
“A car,” she shouted.
Kenny coughed and Morgan laughed.
“Not happening,” Kenny said. He looked at the rearview mirror, and Ava crossed her arms and leaned back in the seat.
“At least not yet,” Kenny begrudgingly said.
Ava perked up at that news.
“Well, I hope you like your surprise even if it’s not a car,” Morgan said as he turned back around.
“Wait, I thought you were going to tell me my surprise.”
Morgan shrugged. “We’re almost there. It’s just easier for you to see.”
They had another twenty minutes before they got to their destination, but it sounded as if it was pure torture for Ava. She asked every few minutes what her surprise was. By the time they pulled up to the go-kart place, she’d guessed everything but.
She hurriedly got out of the car. “I get to race against both of you?” she asked gleefully.
Kenny’s stomach fell at the thought, but he just nodded.
“Oh, I am going to drive laps around you two.”
That sounded dangerous and way too fast. Kenny kept his thoughts to himself knowing that both were already excited about racing. They made their way inside and to the ticket booth.
“Welcome to Go Go Go. One race, two race, or three races?” the cashier behind
