His Apprehensive Mate - Brea Alepou Page 0,53

no attention to. He shook his head.

“You fucking runt,” Lyndon cursed.

He aimed for Morgan’s snout. Pain radiated up his nose; he tried to ignore it, but as it got harder to breathe, Morgan was forced to let go. He scrambled back and shook his head. Blood dripped from his mouth and nose. The sound of bones breaking and groans turning into growls formed around him.

Five wolves attacked Morgan at once. He had no hope of winning, but he planned on fighting. He growled low, baring his fangs, making sure no one got behind him.

“Oh, you think running off and joining a bunch of cats gives you the right to raise your fangs at us?” Lyndon asked. He clutched his already healing arm.

It must be nice being the alpha and using all the power of the pack for himself.

Morgan spared Lyndon one glance but focused on the five wolves slowly circling him.

“You need to be taught a lesson, a reminder. You’re a runt, the bottom of the pack.”

Morgan didn’t take his eyes off the five wolves. They were waiting for the chance, and he wouldn’t give it to them. Until he heard a cry, one he knew all too well.

“Stop, that hurts. Please, you said you would leave him alone,” Ava cried out.

Morgan’s heart broke at the sound of his niece’s pleading words.

“You are just like him, worthless and pathetic,” Lyndon said.

Morgan growled in anger. How dare he speak to Ava that way. Where was Ciara? As much as his sister hated him, she couldn’t possibly hold the same disdain for her own daughter, right? But Morgan could have said the same about his parents; they were loving until they weren’t. Morgan didn’t think love was supposed to work that way.

“Come on, runt. You think you can really take five of my strongest?”

No, but was he willing to try. Hell yeah. Ava cried more. She was a child—she didn’t need to see the cruelty that was her father.

“Please, Dad—” A slap echoed. It was deafening to Morgan’s sensitive hearing.

Ava’s cheek was beet red, and tears streamed down her face as her hand shook near her face. The utter disbelief on her face was pointed at Lyndon. Morgan reacted—his only thought was of saving Ava, to get her away from the madman who was supposed to love and protect her. He leapt toward Lyndon, but he didn’t get very far. One of the wolves tackled him down to the ground. Claws and teeth took chunks of fur from his side. Morgan rolled away before they were able to draw blood. He shook off the attack and got ready again to make an attempt at Lyndon. The smug bastard stood there laughing at Morgan each time another wolf took him down.

They got tired of waiting on Morgan and attacked all at once. Morgan tried to fend them off, but one got behind him and leapt onto his back, teeth sinking into his neck. Pain flared on his neck, and his fur grew soaked with blood. He tried to shake the wolf off his back while defending himself from the other four wolves.

Morgan didn’t move fast enough. Claws came into view before coming down on his face. He was blinded by his own blood as he backed away. Morgan let out a distressed whine. He rolled over and finally dislodged the wolf from his back. They didn’t let up on their attacks, and he couldn’t catch a break. None of them, however, went for the killing blow. It was as if they were toying with him.

They snapped their teeth at him, and Morgan jumped out of the way. He could barely see. His lungs felt on fire, his neck hurt, blood was all he could smell and taste.

“Stop, please,” Ava cried out.

Morgan lunged for one of the wolves. He needed to go on the offensive. It was a mistake—he was slow no matter the number of endorphins pumping through him. The wolf dodged but not without retaliating, and his teeth sunk into Morgan’s hind leg. There was a resounding crunch, and Morgan’s vision went white as he lost his footing and hit the ground. The pain searing up his leg was unbearable.

“Done already with your little show of rebellion?”

Morgan couldn’t see Lyndon, but he was sure the alpha wolf was sneering down at him. He heard Ava crying, and Morgan tried to get up but fell back down as one of the wolves rammed into him. He rolled over on the ground. He pleaded
