“Yep.”
“That’s great.”
“Star!” Someone called out. “Quick, get help, Richard’s passed out!”
Star took off, rushing through the crowd.
Even though she didn’t really want to, she took off with her. “I’m a nurse, I can help.”
As they approached the dining room, River noted a large group of people surrounding a man on the floor.
“We have a nurse here, back up!” Star called out.
Much like what River imagined the red sea parting, the line opened at Star’s command.
River found herself staring at Charlotte and a man she presumed was her husband at her side. After all, he was wearing a tux.
“River,” Charlotte said, waving her over. “Good.” She turned to the man in the tux. “Ryan, tell her what happened.”
She knew beside the man, putting her hand on his chest and leaning in to access if he was breathing.
“I opened the door and he shook my hand, then just stumbled in and kind of collapsed into my arms.”
Adrenaline coursed through her but she didn’t mind, this was the kind of adrenaline she liked. The kind she’d gotten used to in New York when she’d worked in the E.R. The kind of adrenaline that made her feel alive.
She checked for a pulse and found one and she detected his breathing. “Hmm, is he allergic to anything?” She yearned for a diagnostic machine.
“I don’t think so,” Ryan answered.
“Does he…” suddenly she pulled back, recognizing the man’s face. “Richard?” she asked, a bit out of breath.
The man didn’t move.
“Do you know Richard?” Charlotte asked.
She turned and stared into the crowd of questioning gazes. Her heart raced like she’d just run a 5K on Christmas morning. Confusion filled her. “I…” She couldn’t believe the man would be here. He hadn’t lived in Hidden Falls, he’d only been working on a ranch for the summer. “Richard Chavez?” She questioned, turning back to the man and definitely seeing the boy she used to know tucked away in his manly face.
“Yes, that’s him.” Charlotte said.
River didn’t let this hiccup, no matter how large of a hiccup it felt, get in the way of her medicine. She put her hand on this forehead. “He doesn’t feel warm.”
Then it hit her. Something he’d actually done once when they’d been together. She stood. “I need a cup of water.”
People shuffled and it wasn’t long before a cup of water was handed to Ryan, who handed it to her.
“The ambulance is coming, they will give him an I.V. when they get here.”
She threw the water on Richard’s face.
The crowd gasped.
“What did you do that for?” Ryan demanded.
But it wasn’t two seconds and Richard sucked in a breath and tried to sit up.
“It’s all right, you’ll be fine.”
Richard’s eyes focused on hers, then he lay back down. “River, is that you?”
