Her Hidden Falls Bodyguard Billionaire Cowboy - Taylor Hart Page 0,22
road. “Your house is just down the east side of the beach. Follow the road and you’ll drive right to it.”
“Thank you,” Sean said, sounding more like himself with those two words than he had since she’d seen him. He drove on, still keeping himself very FBI.
It was stupid, but when Agent Anderson had told her that Sean would be the agent assigned to her, Angela had expected the old Sean. She blinked hard and tried to ignore the tears suddenly filling her eyes. She hated that she had to run again. To leave not just Sean, but everyone in Hidden Falls.
They pulled up to the beach house. With its spacious construction and large windows, it looked like it could be straight out of the million-dollar-home TV shows that she’d grown up watching with her brother.
Sean let out a long breath, staring intently forward. “So are you going to run, or are you going to testify?”
The question took her by surprise. “I told Agent Anderson I would testify, didn’t I?”
Sean finally turned to face her. “I know what you said, but I don’t believe it.”
“I said I would testify,” she repeated. Intuition. Right. The guy did have it, and it was annoying as all get out. But Angela was twitchy, and she didn’t know who she could trust. She needed access to a computer, to her bank accounts stowed away. She needed to see exactly what her brother had given his life for.
Time was what she needed more than anything.
Sean inspected her face. “You put my family in danger.”
Pain pierced through her like a dagger. “I never meant to put your family in danger. You have to know that.”
His once light, happy gray eyes now looked like thunderclouds of dark steel. “No, you chose to go to Hidden Falls. You chose to be friends with Charlotte, my brother, Star, all of us.” His nostrils flared. “You chose that. And that means you chose to put us in danger.”
Don’t trust anybody.
Why hadn’t she listened to her brother? When she slipped up, she always paid. Or her brother had paid. If keeping herself alive was the only gift she could give her brother now, then that was what she would do. No matter who she had to lie to.
“You’re right.” She pushed open the car door and turned her attention to the small, manicured yard that led to a front porch straight out of a Land’s End magazine.
She marched to the front steps, gazing at the sky. The sun was just starting to set, and the horizon was painted pink and orange. A gate surrounded the house, and she longed to see the beach she knew was behind it.
Sean got out, too, and checked his phone as he moved toward the house. “The boss says there are clothes for us here. We need to stay on resort property, but we’re free to do any of the excursions or go to the restaurants.” He climbed the stairs.
Reluctantly, she followed. “Let me use one of those burner phones.”
“No.” He put the key into the lock and pushed open the door.
Their eyes met and her heart skipped a beat as she passed him, trying to forget the lump that had been in her throat the whole way to Myrtle Beach. No way could she allow herself to mourn everything she’d lost in Hidden Falls. “I want to check in on everyone. I want to talk to Charlotte.” The memory of Charlotte telling her she loved her still burned a hole in her heart.
“I’ll check on them and let you know.”
For a long moment, she glared at him. He glared back, unmoved.
She moved into the main area of the beach house. It was airy, with an open kitchen and living room, a fountain on the rock wall, and pictures of exotic flowers. What took her breath away, though, was the huge set of glass windows lining the back of the house.
She pushed all thoughts away of Sean and Hidden Falls and the fact she needed to figure out how the heck to get out of here, and she rushed to the sliding glass door. She unlocked it and pushed it open, excitement bubbling through her.
An infinity pool and hot tub awaited her on the deck, but she passed right by them and headed toward the gate that opened up to the beach. Without even thinking, she moved down the steps and pushed open the gate.
“Hey, wait!” Sean called out behind her.
Her breath caught as she gazed
