Her Christmas Detective - Laura Ann Page 0,48

you love me anyway.”

Henry smiled brilliantly. “Yes...yes, I do. But that doesn’t mean you don’t drive me nuts sometimes.”

Bella scowled as Emory and Tony snickered. “Oh yeah?” she began. “Well you—”

“Excuse us, will you?” Henry said to the other couple. Stepping out of the dance, he took Bella’s hand and led her out of the large sitting room of the mansion that had been turned back into a ballroom for the wedding.

“What’s the matter? Don’t want to fight in public?” Bella teased, letting herself be dragged along.

“As a matter of fact, I don’t want to fight at all,” he shot over his shoulder.

“Chicken,” she grumbled. Their banter was her favorite part of the day. Ever since they’d gotten engaged, she couldn’t seem to go twenty-four hours without teasing and kissing him. They had become her favorite things in the world.

After glancing around to make sure no one was watching, Henry pulled her across the foyer, down the hallway, and into the family room. After closing the door behind them, he pushed her up against the wall and caged her in. “Now...I think it’s time we took care of Ms. Hangry.”

Bella’s jaw dropped. “I’m not hangry! I’m not even hungry!”

Henry’s answering smirk gave her pause. When his thumb traced her jawline, she sucked in a breath, especially as he rubbed her scar several times. It was only a small, thin line, barely visible, but Henry always seemed to find it and couldn’t stop touching it. “You are hungry. Just not for food.”

Bella’s lips pulled into a slow smile as she realized where he was going with this. She slid her hands up his chest and clasped them behind his neck. “Oh, really? Then what do you think I’m hungry for?”

“The only thing that’ll satisfy you,” he bragged. He gave her a slow, lingering kiss. “Your very own detective,” he whispered against her lips.

“You know I hate to admit it,” she said between kisses. “But you’re absolutely right.”

“I’m writing that down,” Henry teased as he kissed her neck. “And I don’t promise not to use it during a future fight.”

Bella shrugged. “Don’t worry. I don’t fight fair either.”

“Perfect,” he breathed before bringing his mouth to hers.

As pleasurable shocks and emotions rushed through her, Bella forgot all about being right or wrong. All she cared about right now was enjoying her Christmas Detective as much as she could for as long as she could. They’d eventually have to go back to the wedding, but she was going to have her fill first. And nothing and no one, not even a Pulitzer Prize winning story, could pull her away.

“HER UNEXPECTED ROOMMATE”

CHAPTER 1

BRIGHTLY COLORED BIRDS hopping along the branch as if they hadn’t a care in the world. Leaves fluttered in a playful breeze, while people walked, talked and smiled their way through their day. It’s as if they don’t even care...

“Ms. Winters?”

Genni forced her eyes away from the spring filled sight outside. The bright sunshine that radiated in nature was in sharp contrast to the darkness and despair sitting inside her chest at the moment. “Yes?”

“Are you ready to hear the will?” Mr. Filchor asked kindly. His nose twitched, causing his full mustache to shift like a squirming caterpillar.

A small part of Genni wanted to chuckle at the image, but laughter hadn’t been a part of her life for a long time and it still held no place now. “Go ahead, but I already know what it says.” She clasped her cold hands together.

Mr. Filchor cleared his throat. “I’m sure you do,” he agreed with a heavy nod. “Maggie...Mrs. Winters planned for this a long time ago.”

Genni nodded and let her mind wander again. Other than the lawyer, she was the sole person in the room. Because I’m the only one left. Her mother had died when Gennie was a little girl, leaving her in the hands of her widowed grandmother. Her mother had no siblings and no one knew Genni’s father to be able to contact any other family. It had always been assumed he was a passing tourist. A
