elbow. “That’s something I never thought would come out of your mouth.”

“Cal, we’ve seen her.”

Dave’s shout squawked into Josh’s ear.

“Where?” Cal barked.

“Near the fence at the end.”

“Go!” Josh said. “I’ll have your back.”

Cal kissed his cheek and took off at a run. Josh took a deep breath. They’d found Weatherly but it wasn’t over yet. They couldn’t let Moles escape.

“Don’t move.”

Chapter 17

“Stay where you are,” Chyna ordered.

Josh turned slowly to see Chyna, a gun pointed at his chest. The gun was unwavering, and he knew she wouldn’t hesitate to use it if she felt threatened. His skin prickled with fear.

“Chyna, it’s been a long time.”

“My name is—”

“Ileana Ramirez. Yes, we know. Chyna Moles has such a ring to it, don’t you think? Is that why you killed little Chyna and her family?”

She shrugged, her long black hair sliding over one shoulder. “They were convenient. Congratulations on finding their graves. I didn’t think any of you would work it out as none of you go to church.”

Josh’s blood boiled as he thought of the little girl’s family, sacrificed for this madwoman’s plan.

“Sir Gideon knew though, didn’t he?”

Her lip curled. “That old man thought he could outwit me.”

He held back the heated response. She had outwitted them for far too long, and Sir Gideon had kept too much back. If only he’d spoken up when he discovered the graves in the church near his home in Waterford.

“You played a very long game,” he said.

“And it worked.” She flashed him a triumphant smile. “They thought I couldn’t do it, but I did.”

“Who’s they?” he asked.

“None of your business,” she snarled.

“You made it my business when you killed Landry Grover.”

“I didn’t pull the trigger. Who did?” She snapped her fingers. “Oh yes, his twin killed him. How tragic.”

“You killed him, you bitch, when you played on his weakness.”

“It’s not my fault Grover had a gambling addiction. It just made him easier to use.”

“That’s what you did, didn’t you? You used people. You and your minions. Used them and spat them out. Even Billy.”

“He was weak.”

“He did your dirty work for you.”

Josh thought it ironic he was defending a murderer. A man who had tried to kill him. He still felt the ghost of Billy’s hands on his back sometimes, shoving him onto the Tube track as the train rushed toward them.

“He was useful.”

Chyna’s eyes were cold and lifeless. She really didn’t care what she’d done.

“They were all useful. Billy, Lucy, who else?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know.”

“Well, yeah, Chyna, that’s my job,” he said sarcastically.

Her eyes narrowed. “You were a mistake. I should never have gotten you involved.”

“You didn’t. Cal did.”

“Who do you think suggested you as an employee to Jesse?”

“Why?” he demanded.

She shrugged. “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer? Besides, I thought Billy was going to dispose of you. I should have gotten rid of him when he failed to kill you and Waldron’s boyfriend.” She smiled, although it never reached her eyes. “How are dear Jesse and Dan?”

A shiver of fear went through Josh. Did she know where they were?

“You leave them alone,” he said, hating that his voice shook. “You and your family have done enough to them.”

“He murdered my brother!”

“If we’re comparing body count, how many have you killed?” Josh took a deep breath. It was stupid to antagonize her.

“Their blood is on his hands,” she snarled.

Josh shook his head. “No. You did that. Not Jesse.”

“He’s a killer.”

“And so are you.”

Cal was approaching from his left, Rick from the right. Both of them had their weapons aimed at her. Chyna didn’t blink, didn’t take her eyes away from Josh.

“I was defending my family’s honor.”

“But that’s not true, is it, Chyna?” Josh said quietly. “Your family didn’t know where you’d gone. They thought you were dead. This is an unauthorized mission.”

“They told you?” She sounded shocked.

“No, you just did. It wasn’t like I was gonna call your uncle and ask if he’d sent his niece on a mission to bring down the British government.”

“You have such a way with words,” Cal said.

Josh smirked at him. “I try.”

“Shut up or I’ll shoot you,” she snapped.

Sweat trickled down Josh’s temple as the gun stayed trained on his heart. She was cold and uncaring. The weapon was aimed at him, but she could fire at any one of them. “You don’t want to do that.” He wanted the attention back on him.

It worked, at least for a few seconds as Chyna curled her lip at him. “I’ll do it without blinking. Your life
