The Healer (The Order of Intergalactic Peace #1) - Kelly Lucille Page 0,69
a councilman is the only reason you’re still breathing,” Jas said his voice nearly feral with his growl.
“Keep trying to eat through my shield Councilor Gren and I will assume you are attacking us as well as the medical staff,” Flinn’s cold hard voice had its own furious edge to it. From the way he sounded it was clear he wanted an excuse as badly as Jas did.
“What the hell is happening in here?”
Serenity slumped down in relief. Mal Ryn had arrived.
“Your man attacked me…” Gren started and was immediately interrupted.
“Where is my healer?” Mal interrupted with fury cold in his voice. His power preceded him, so she didn’t need movement at the end of the bed she lay half under to know he had found her. The flare of rage she sensed from him flared at finding her wounded. She met his eyes but didn’t speak. She was not about to draw attention to herself when the Councilor was still in the room. Mal Ryn banked his rage like he layered it with ice before he turned his back on her and disappeared back around the bed.
“I can only assume that your power is in control of your thinking Councilman Gren. There is no other reason I can think of where you lay your hand on one of mine, against the rules of the accord and with my reminder still echoing in your head.”
“I am allowed to discipline anyone who shows me disrespect,” Gren hissed right back.
“Disrespect?” Mal asked.
“I told you she needs training. I walked in and she showed a gross lack of manners.”
There was a long silence before she heard another growl. “Regardless of whether you speak true or not…”
“You dare to question…” Gren started interrupting but Mal talked over him.
“Regardless, she is one of my people, which means not yours to discipline.”
Meg came creeping around the bed and saw her laying there with her eyes open and immediately looked relieved. She came forward and knelt beside Serenity. She started to speak but Serenity shook her head warningly and she closed her mouth. Meg looked her over instead, she started to send her healing power out but again, Serenity grabbed her hand and stopped her with a shake of her head. Then mouthed, “wait.”
Meg closed her eyes and nodded again, slumping down a little more so that she could not be seen over the bed either. They sat like that, Serenity healing as she did. And they both waited for the councilman to leave, silent. Serenity laying half under the bunk and completely concealed from the drama happening on the other side of the room. Nearly as soon as Meg joined her she saw Flinn walk around the bed, look at them briefly without expression, then turn and stand at attention with his back to them. The shield he emitted circled them and the bed.
As soon as she felt that, Serenity closed her eyes and allowed herself to sink into her healing. Assured that none of her powers could be felt outside of her body. The shield should keep the others from feeling the small amount she was emitting. Meg had her hand still on her, so she felt it and slumped a little more in sheer relief. Allowing more of her healing to happen without drawing attention meant that by the time Councilman Gren flounced in anger out of the room she was fully healed. She still stayed there until Mal Ryn, Flinn, and Jas all came around the bed and looked down at them in a semi-circle.
All of them looked worried and furious. Mal looked like he was a second from demolishing the room. No one said a word until the doors swished back open and closed and Riff joined their circle above the women. “He’s gone.”
Mal reached down and lifted Serenity up with a hand under her shoulders and one under her knees. He laid her carefully on the bed, moving like she was going to break.
Serenity immediately rolled to the other side of the bed and stood up. Making all of them hiss and curse.
“I’m fine,” she assured them. “I can heal more than a few broken bones and a concussion.”
The silence after her words made her think she should not have been quite so forthcoming with her injuries. They all looked her over as if looking for something. She shrugged.
“I’m healed. It hurt when it happened, but honestly being choked and thrown into the wall was the lesser of evils. Better that
