Chapter One
“I hope you remembered to wear the flame retardant jumper I made you. The likelihood Harvey Lawson can breathe fire is almost seventy-five percent.”
I stopped dead in the middle of one of Sacramento’s back alleys, loose asphalt crunching beneath my boots. An oil spill made a semi-circle of rainbow beneath my feet. The space between the restaurant and its neighbor was wide enough to allow trucks to load and unload. The dumpster smelled vaguely of bad fish. Seafood restaurant, maybe?
I screwed my earpiece on tighter, hoping I’d misheard him. Stupid, really. Lock had traded his sense of humor for an addiction to morphine and cocaine back in the 1880s.

“Ugh. File it away in your ‘Ask Watson’ column, Lock,” I snapped. “We’re wasting moonlight and I don’t have time to teach you how to adapt to the current century. Fill me in on Lawson again… please.”
Sherlock sucked in a mouthful of air and released it in a long-suffering outbreath of lament. He did that a lot, even with Watson, which made me feel better. At least, a little. I may have been an idiot, but I was counted among the tolerable ones, in Sherlock’s estimation, anyway.
“You wouldn’t need a briefing if you’d taken the pack I offered you.”
Now it was my turn to sigh. Or maybe it came out as more of a scoff. The backpack Lock
