me if I feel like being shit out of this golden goose.” James didn’t care that his objections sounded petulant when he spit them out. He’d been worried about exactly this since the moment he’d stood at Bare Natural and realized, even if Kayla hadn’t been ready to admit it to herself, that there was no bouncing back from that tragedy. Not there.
Devon smiled then. “I have a proposition for you.”
Ordinarily those words from her would have him perking up, spiritually and also south of the border. These days, he was afraid to get his hopes up. It was all too much. Things were spiraling out of control, one massive switch up after another, and soon he wouldn’t even recognize the life they were building anymore.
“You can work for me.” She held her hand out to him, palm up. “I’m happy to boss you around.”
He didn’t mean to, but he snorted at that. She was pretty good at it.
“Come on.” She curled her fingers, beckoning him.
“But their plans and the revenue they’re expecting…”
“Are still amazing, even with five crews instead of six.” Mike put his hand on James’s shoulder and the muscles there unknotted some. He would always be their foreman, even if they were all foremen these days. “No one’s going to pressure you into doing a job you hate. What kind of assholes do you think we are?”
Devon kept talking him off the ledge, at least a bit. For now. “If you don’t want to be on my crew, you could do something totally different. Quit to take care of our new house. Get everything set up exactly how you like it. Make a new home for us and help us relax when we get home at night.”
Devon and Neil exchanged a steamy glance that did a lot to ease James’s anxiety. He might be able to make it through the night without ruining everyone’s zen. Then maybe later, he could consider what they were proposing more carefully.
“Everyone’s starting over. It’s only fair that you take some time to think about what you really want, too,” Morgan chimed in. “Shouldn’t it be obvious by now that we’ll support you, no matter what it is you choose?”
James could breathe again, maybe for the first time in weeks. He hadn’t realized how dread had started to form in his guts, getting heavier by the day until the burden was nearly impossible to lug around. He was exhausted and decided to believe there could be a simple solution, even if he didn’t see it himself at the moment.
What he didn’t realize then was that the greatest threat to the happiness of the crew wasn’t going to come from within, but from someone trying their best to destroy it.
