Gold Rush (Blackwood Security #4) - Elise Noble Page 0,138

nasal tone was imprinted on my mind.

“I can’t believe I had to suck that old guy off to get a ticket to this, and it took ages for his Viagra to kick in.”

Her whiny friend was back too. “My date’s older than my grandfather. I don’t understand it—you’d think men would be falling over themselves to ask us out. My father’s got his own plane.”

“Ridiculous, that’s what it is. Half the women here have wrinkles.”

“And we didn’t get to meet the president. Do you think he really has a tattoo?”

“I doubt it. His publicist probably made that up to get column inches.”

Oh, Katya had no idea, did she?

“That’s a good plan. Maybe we should try that?”

I stifled a giggle, picturing a pair of tattooed socialites prancing across the cover of the National Enquirer.

Then Katya’s talons came out. “And Nick Goldman’s here with the dumpling girl again. What does he see in her?”

“I have no idea. But Emerson’s with a billionaire—at least, that’s what my date said. She probably takes it up the ass for that.”

Oh, that was the last straw. I’d had quite enough of their rudeness, and I wasn’t about to let them insult Emmy either. I quickly checked I hadn’t left my dress tucked into my panties then marched out the door.

“Don’t mind me, girls. It’s just I’m in a hurry to get back to my incredibly handsome boyfriend who has his own helicopter and doesn’t need any performance-enhancing drugs.” I caught sight of their shocked expressions in the mirror as I washed my hands. “It’s been a busy night, what with getting my photo taken with the president and eating two portions of chocolate mousse.”

Katya’s mouth dropped open, and I couldn’t help smiling. Moments like this weren’t quite as sweet as Nick, but they were up there. I didn’t even wobble as I marched out the door.

And walked right into a member of the Secret Service, complete with earpiece and scowl. Ahead of him, a silver dress swished around the corner, followed by the now-unmistakable profile of President Harrison.

“Sorry,” I mumbled, and the bodyguard stood aside to let me past.

“Not a problem, ma’am.”

Was that Emmy in the silver dress? Where was she going with the president? I took one last look, but apart from a solitary man in a suit lurking at the corner, the entourage had disappeared.

Oh well. I headed back to the dining room, and Nick smiled as I took my place at his side.

“Everything okay?” he asked.

“Perfect. But what’s up with him?” I gestured towards the Dark Lord, who was staring into a tumbler of whisky as if his eyes could shatter the crystal.

“Emmy’s left him on his own. He’ll be fine; don’t worry. Tonight’s our night. Do you want to dance?”

“As long as it’s with you.”

“I’m not planning to let you go. Ever.”

And that suited me just fine.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

The Blackwood Security series continues in Gray Is My Heart…

Georgia Rutherford-Beaumont has it all.

A wealthy husband.

A powerful father.

A hitman trying to kill her.

Congressman’s daughter Georgia longs for a little excitement in her life, at least until it arrives in the form of a high-velocity bullet. With Blackwood Security on the case, Georgia hides out with reclusive artist Mitchell Gray as the team tries to unravel the web of secrets, lies, and worse, actual spiders. Who wants her dead? One of her father’s many enemies? Somebody closer to home? Or is it the Horsemen, the elite band of assassins Georgia’s not supposed to know about?

Georgia’s time away from home leads her to question everything, including herself. Where does the real danger lie? In death? Or in a life not truly lived?

For an author, every review is incredibly important. Not only do they make us feel warm and fuzzy inside, readers consider them when making their decision whether or not to buy a book. Even a line saying you enjoyed the book or what your favourite part was helps a lot.

END OF BOOK STUFF

I knew halfway through the Black trilogy that I wanted to write Nick’s story. I felt a bit guilty about Emmy breaking his nose and also for killing off his fiancée. And after having Emmy blow up part of Syria and a good chunk of Colombia, I wanted to write a softer character, one who hadn’t been brought up on a diet of guns and health food. So Lara was born, with her good heart and insecurities.

Parts of the book, the bad parts, were inspired by events going on around me. The year I wrote Gold, four friends developed breast cancer, and while three of them survived, one didn’t make it. Another friend was a victim of domestic abuse. The guy who did it, everybody’s friend, the jovial chap at the party, hid it well. Luckily, that story had a happy ending, the happiest, in fact—she made a beautiful bride. Please, if it happens to you, tell someone. Know you’re not alone.

Okay, onto the happier stuff. The research for this book was fun—hard abs, hot cars, cupcakes, and yes, I did google apadravya. Then hastily cleared my browser history. And I loved getting into Emmy’s head again. While I was writing, ideas for other stories kept popping into my head, and I decided to make Blackwood into a series. Sexy guys, strong girls, uh, Bradley… I’m having a ball writing these books. Next up is Mr. Gray, another of Emmy’s exes with a penchant for guns and bending the truth.

Happy reading!
