Going Under_ A Bill Roberts Thriller - Silas Payton Page 0,45
"Were you upset with your boyfriend, or was this some sort of a plan?"
"Look. I told you I don't know anything about this. This must be a set-up or something. Did you set this up to make me look bad to Louis?"
"I can assure you, this is not a fabrication on our part. Two officers died there last night and we want to know why the police were called in the first place."
Bethany seemed quite agitated and even afraid. She glanced at her watch. "I have no idea why the police went there last night. You always seem to have a reason to harass Louis. I already told you, I can't help you. That wasn't me on the recording. Now can I have my phone back? I have to be somewhere."
"Where do you have to go at this hour, Bethany?" asked Bill, looking at his watch.
"If you must know, I'm meeting someone," she said. "Now I'd like my phone back, please." She put her hand out to Bill.
Cliff had been standing during the exchange. Bill saw him casually wandering around the room during the questioning. While Bethany was trying to get her phone back from the Inspector, he walked behind her to a table which had a phone on it. Bill watched as he made a note of something in his notepad.
"I could charge you with public mischief, for making a false call to 911," Bill said. Cliff shook his head behind her, and Bill quickly added, "For now, we'll let this go, but I'm curious what your boyfriend would say if he found out you had the police show up at his clubhouse. I can't imagine he'd be very happy with you. In fact, you might say, your relationship may be short lived, if you know what I mean."
He handed her his business card. "My cell number is on here. I'd like you to call me if you have a change of heart. I'm not sure how long we can resist telling Louis about this."
Bethany stood and swept her hand toward the door in a gesture making it clear she wanted them to leave. Bill stood and then sat back down. He was light headed.
"You should have your shoulder looked at. You don't look so well," Bethany said.
Cathy was beside him and gave him a hand getting up. "That's what we've been telling him."
"Maybe you should stop harassing people at this hour on a Saturday morning, and go look after yourself," Bethany said as they were walking out the door.
"Thanks for your sincere concern," said Bill. "We will be talking to you again soon."
Chapter 48
Bill Roberts
Bill and his team left Bethany's house and piled into the unmarked car.
"What a total waste of time," said Evans.
"Not a total waste," said Bill. "She didn't react like someone who had been caught in a lie. She reacted in total disbelief, like she was shocked to hear her own voice on the recording."
"I don't think she believes she made the call," he said turning to nod at Cliff. "Did you pick up on something in there?"
"She has an appointment with a Dr. Nelson at seven."
"Seven in the morning? What kind of doctor sees patients at seven on a Saturday morning?"
Cathy was entering something on her smart phone, while the others discussed the interaction. "The only Dr. Nelson in Toronto is a urologist," she said.
"Evans, isn't that the guy you were seeing for your erectile dysfunction?" Cliff asked.
"You're the one pushing fifty, old man. You'll be having problems with the joystick long before me."
"Cliff, back the car down the street a few houses, and into a driveway. Hopefully, we won't alarm anyone this early, but I'd like to see where our Bethany is going."
They waited and watched, while Cathy searched for more doctors by the name Nelson, in the area. About ten minutes went by before the garage door opened and Bethany drove out. It was obvious by the way she pulled onto the street she was either in a hurry, or rattled by their visit.
The car, an Audi A4, sped off in the other direction.
"Follow that car!" Bill yelled, pointing at the Audi.
They all looked at him, strangely. Cliff said what they were all thinking, "You okay? This isn't your first time doing this."
"What's the problem?" he asked, looking at them.
"I think those pain meds are getting to you." Cliff said, shaking his head.
Cliff pulled onto the road and followed at a safe distance to not spook her. They made it out of
