call. “Hello,” I grumble low into the connection.
Eva stirs on my chest and sighs, not waking, but nuzzling deeper into my heat. I lift my hand from her ass and absently play with the hair at her temple. It’s so soft beneath my fingertips. Not like my hair, but still soft to the touch.
“Where the fuck is Eva?” King growls into the phone. “She’s not answering her damn phone.”
I sigh inwardly. I knew this was coming. Like I said, if I had an ounce of a brain, I would have taken Eva home last night. I sat awake in between our bouts of lovemaking, trying to figure out how to handle this.
I won’t lie to my brother. That’s not an option. I also won’t hide how I feel about Eva any longer. She belongs to me. If I have to go toe to toe with my best friend over this, then that’s what I’ll have to do. I’m not letting her go.
I think carefully over my next words. I don’t want to get into a heated argument with Eva laying here in bed with me. I don’t want to wake her if I can help it. I go to slip from beneath her, but she follows me like a magnet. I chuckle inwardly and give up trying to move.
“She’s with me. She was shaken up last night, so she came to my place.” This isn’t a lie that I tell.
Eva was in shock from the moment she stepped out of that bathroom. It was written all over her beautiful face. Whether it was because of the situation or because I had come for her, is something King doesn’t need to know right now.
King sighs into the phone, but his next words cause my brows to draw and my chest to tighten. “I need another favor. She can go to the apartment to pack a few things, but I need you to keep her with you until I can smooth some shit over,” King says sounding so unlike my brother.
He sounds frustrated, unfocused, and almost desperate. This time I do pull my body from beneath Eva’s and swing my legs over the side of the bed. I stand and pad my way into the bathroom. My chest is tight with the need to go to war for my woman’s safety.
“What’s going on?” I growl into the phone. “Some motherfucker have a death wish?”
King releases another breath. I can see him shaking his head in my own mind. “No brother, this shit is on me. I don’t want to involve Eva in my shit. I just need some time. I know this is asking a lot, I need a few weeks. I don’t need to complicate this any further. Trust me, when I wrap my head around this shit, we’re going to need to have a few beers together,” King says.
The turmoil in his voice is clear. I think better of adding to his stress by telling him about me and Eva right at this moment. It can wait, for now. Something tells me King has tipped the scales on something that has been long coming. If it’s what I think it is, this could work in my favor.
“You know I have your back, brother,” I say. “She’s good with me. I’ll take her to the apartment before I head into the office. I’ll just have to move some things around.”
“Thanks, brother,” King says sounding relieved. I feel like shit. He’s asking this of me, thinking he can trust me. “Make sure she gets her ass up for her interview and gets there on time. I don’t want her thinking things are being handed to her. I spoil her and Sal enough. The women in my life drive me fucking insane. Listen, I gotta go.”
Eva
I feel the absence of his warmth instantly. I crack a lid open to see Owen’s perfect ass walking into the bathroom before he disappears behind the door. I groggily notice his phone in his hand. As my brain clears and his muffled voice in the other room start to reach me, I become self-conscious and wonder if it’s his girlfriend on the other line.
I have seen the women Brick dates. They are the total opposite of me. Tall, thin, once or twice, I have seen him with a Latina woman, but calling her curvy next to me is an understatement of the century. For the most part, he dates classic Barbies.
