reaction and parked his golf cart in front of the cabin she would be using. He’d picked up the key early in the morning, before heading to the equipment shed, and they’d already retrieved her suitcases from the back of her car.
Her car hadn’t surprised him. It was a high-end model, but not luxury, and people often spent more on big purchases than they did on the little things. Hell, he and his brothers all had expensive work trucks, and that was mostly just for hauling and doing things around the lake. If he had to commute every day, he might have purchased something even more costly.
Her suitcases had made him pause though. He’d seen enough luggage to know that the two bags were high-end, especially compared to most of the backpacks and duffel bags people brought to the lake, but he found it strange that they didn’t seem to match the woman beside him.
Stacey was soft and sweet, and the clothes she wore were cute and casual. She didn’t stand out as being extravagant, or focused on labels, but the bags did. They could have been a gift, or maybe there had been a sale, or hell…there could be any number of other reasons for her expensive luggage, but he found the paring odd.
He didn’t ask her about it, though. She was already too reserved around him, and if he started asking the wrong questions, he knew that she would completely shut-down. Later, he would ask Lacey what she knew, but if Stacey was hiding something, it wasn’t anything big.
At least not in the grand scheme of things.
She wasn’t a threat to him or his family, and he didn’t think she was in any trouble, so that meant that whatever she was hiding was personal, and he would have to be patient if he ever hoped to find out what it was.
“Here’s the key,” he said. “I’ll get the bags.”
“Okay, thanks.”
No matter what reservations she had toward him, they didn’t transfer over to his family—which he had learned the night before—and they definitely didn’t transfer over to her excitement about the cabin.
She unlocked the door, and then left it open while she checked out the inside. By the time he brought in the suitcases, the grin on her face was huge.
“This place is perfect,” she exclaimed when she saw him.
Lael glanced around at the cabin and wanted to laugh. Though the place had running water and electricity, the guest cabins were designed for functionality only. There was a living space with a couch and a coffee table, a kitchenette with small appliances for basic cooking or reheating, and a bedroom that contained a full-sized bed and a nightstand. And that was it. The place was far from being perfect, but her enthusiasm was definitely real.
“I’m glad you like it,” he chuckled. “Do you want me to put these in the bedroom?”
“Yeah, that would be great.”
She started walking through the place again, as if she wanted to memorize every detail, and he smiled as he walked into the bedroom. The mattress was bare except for a pile of clean sheets, blankets, and pillows that they left for every guest, and there wasn’t a TV in the living room. There wasn’t a fan, either, and though they didn’t supply them for the guests, she was their employee, and she definitely needed one to circulate the air.
“You need a fan,” he said. “Otherwise it’s going to get way too hot in here.”
“I need to go shopping,” she said, “so I’ll add that to the list. I need a TV, too, and some pretty sheets for the bed.”
She walked into the bathroom and started talking about shower curtains and other pretty things, but the last word he’d truly heard was bed, and now he couldn’t stop imagining her naked in his bed. His dick started to swell, and when she came out of the bathroom, he turned to look out the window so she wouldn’t see the hard bulge in his shorts.
Damn!
It had been a long time since he’d had to concentrate on not getting hard around a woman, and though the feeling was a little jarring, he welcomed it. Stacey was the first woman he’d wanted in years, and it made sense that he would be a little crazy around her.
“The fan is on us,” he said. “The stores close early today, so you can borrow one from the shack, and I’ll pick you up a new one tomorrow. If you’d like,
