to obey Henry’s order. But instead of turning away, he leaned closer.

“Have we met, my dear? You seem so familiar.”

She shook her head. “You must be thinking of someone else.”

“My mistake, then.”

“Mr. Lombardi,” Liam barked.

Behind him, Duncan kicked up a tuft of grass, echoing the warning.

“Young people,” Enzo sighed. “Always in a hurry. When you reach my age—”

A blast of heat erupted from behind Holly, and the air whooshed with the beat of mighty wings. Holly ducked, covering her whipping hair. What the…?

Until then, Enzo had remained unimpressed by the guards’ not-so-subtle warnings. But now, his face hardened, and his eyes snapped to a point behind Holly, glowing with hate. Pure, ugly, I will hunt down and murder every person you love kind of hate. All the guards turned, too, as did Holly.

“Lachlan,” she whispered.

Angry Lachlan, her dragon breathed.

Lachlan in human form was impressive. Hell, even asleep, he had an unmistakable, Don’t fuck with me aura. But Lachlan in dragon form, opening his wings in an all-out display of raw alpha anger, was downright terrifying.

Her knees wobbled as Lachlan’s gaze bored into Enzo. Lachlan didn’t utter a word, but a growl built in his throat. A growl like thunder.

Mungo pressed against Holly’s legs, and even Henry’s eyes dropped briefly in submission. But Enzo didn’t blink.

You, his spiteful gaze spat.

Me, Lachlan might as well have thundered.

The air swirled with static electricity, just as it had before the afternoon storm hit.

“Time to go, Mr. Lombardi,” Henry rumbled.

“Now,” Liam growled.

Enzo glowered a moment longer, then swung his golf club over a shoulder like a bat. “Indeed.”

He cast another look at Holly, then back to Lachlan, sniffing. Then he flashed a lecherous grin, making Holly’s skin crawl.

The look he shot Lachlan was a smug one that said, How convenient. I might not have to look too far to find one of those people you love.

Lachlan raised his wings and released a thunderous roar that made everyone cower.

Enzo, however, grinned, as if that were all part of the challenge of golf. Keeping out of sand traps, working around water hazards, and baiting angry dragons.

“It’s been a pleasure, my dear.” He waved to Holly. “I hope to see you again soon.”

Her stomach roiled, and she didn’t deign answer. She just tightened her grip on the leash and turned away.

“Come on, Mungo.”

She hoofed it back up the hill, trying not to show any emotion. Which was hard, given that she marched right past a huge, furious dragon. Although she was a dragon shifter herself, that didn’t exactly happen every day. Lachlan’s chest puffed out as she went by, and he clacked his teeth in Enzo’s direction.

Behind her, Holly could sense the others sweeping into motion. Enzo would be stepping back to his golf cart, surrounded by guards. Tony would slink through the bushes, tracking the prisoner closely, and Duncan would shuffle in the same direction, grazing oh-so-casually. Along the coast, selkies would splash and bark in alarm, while Gemma and the other dragons circled overhead.

Wow. Just another day on Alcatraz? Holly shook her head. She’d never seen such a display of shifter power. All species, all in a compact area, and all on red alert. Liam was right. Enzo Lombardi was not to be messed with.

She refused to look back as she steadily made her way up the hill and over the crest. The moment she stepped out of sight, she exhaled. Whew.

Then the air rushed, and she tensed as Lachlan flew overhead. Would he chastise her for letting down her guard?

He didn’t utter a word, though. He just soared overhead, keeping watch over her. Then he climbed and circled, peering back toward Enzo.

She frowned, finally understanding why everyone at that meeting in Edinburgh had reacted the way they had.

Gleninnis? There must be some mistake.

Gleninnis is out of the question.

Okay, maybe they hadn’t been exaggerating the danger of the place.

“It’s your fault, you know,” she chastised Mungo, who stuck his tail between his legs. “If you hadn’t run off…”

But dammit, this was Trevor’s island. He had every right to have his ashes scattered there, and his dog had every right to roam as he pleased.

Lachlan beat his bronze-tipped wings, heading for the house. He landed and disappeared around the front. She followed on foot, bracing herself for his reaction.

When she got there, he was in human form on the front porch, wearing nothing but a pair of pants he’d pulled on, probably commando-style. A sight she would have found blissfully distracting in any other circumstances. Did he
