Finding The Lost Mystic Islan - Liberty Parker Page 0,17

is off-limits to everyone except staff at this time.” I walk closer to the baby, hiding from her view which one it is exactly that I’m going after.

“Nobody has ever complained about me coming in the nursery before to help out.” She sneers at me as if she’s questioning my statement with contemplation and a menacing stare.

“Things are different now. I have an officer right outside the doors if you would prefer me to ask him to come in and help you out,” I spit out a little hastily.

“Oh, no, ma’am. All I wanted and was trying to do was help out with the feedings and changing of the babies.” She walks toward the door at a pace that some might consider a run.

This has the back of my neck hairs standing on end. I pick up my phone to call Vaughn. I need to let her know what I just walked in on. Running over to the baby boy, I notice something in the crib beside him. I have never seen this sort of object before. As I pick it up, I notice that it’s as cold as ice, making me wish I had a pair of gloves on before handling it. And I’m a damn shifter, cold doesn’t usually bother me in the least, so why this?

Wrapping this oval-shaped object in a blanket to examine later, I place it into the diaper bag to take back to the island with me. Forgetting for a moment what I was going to previously do, I dial Vaughn’s number. She answers rather quickly which surprises me. I inform her of all the events that have taken place at the hospital today. I have to begrudgingly admit to myself that I’m a little shaken up by all of the strange things that have been happening. Hanging up the phone, I pack all of the baby boy’s things he’ll need to have so that I can take care of his hourly needs. He’s coming back with me and the officer to the island so I can ensure his safety personally. Discovering as much information as I possibly can about what these rogue supernaturals are up to and doing with all of these babies is top priority.

I have this intense feeling that Emmaline, and this angelic little boy, who still needs a name, are key and crucial to their operation and are desperately wanted and sought out by the rogues.

“Vaughn.” Trigger calls out my name in a hesitant tone.

“What? What’s wrong?” I ask as I lift my head from looking down at Emmaline while I’ve been feeding her.

“The elders, they’re on their way. I just got a confirmation phone call from one of my friends who holds a higher position of authority. There are a lot of questions they have where it pertains to Emmaline and her powers. He just wanted to give me a heads-up and let me know that they’re coming in with numbers behind them.”

“Numbers? What’s that supposed to mean?” I ask, confused of what it is he’s trying to tell me.

“I mean, they’re coming with their strongest warriors. They also wanna assist in bringing down these rogues. They feel this has been going on too long and fear it’ll bring unwanted attention our way and potentially expose us.”

“It’s a worry we’ve had since this all began,” I say, agreeing with the council’s thoughts.

“Apparently, this is spreading further and wider than just Mystic Island and Galveston, but they feel it’s all stemming from our area,” he informs me with a look of defeat.

“This isn’t your fault. You know that, right? You’ve only been here for a short amount of time and this was happening long before you arrived,” I soothingly remind him.

“The problem with that is that they were expecting to already see results from me and my investigation. I’ve never had as many issues with a job as I have with this one. Veils being opened and closed to other planes, people hiding in plain sight, but me not being able to catch them in nefarious acts. There’s a lot of magic at play here—magic I’m unfamiliar with and have never experienced in any of my endeavors.”

“And having a mate shoved down your throat.” I remind him of the elephant in the room.

“There is that,” he says on a chuckle. “It’s quite the distraction.” When he pulls his hand up and begins rubbing his chin, I think a little drool leaves the confinement of my mouth. He’s so damn sexy
