Grace.”
“I wouldn’t be here without having made the acquaintance of the delightful Lady Ruthersby,” he said smoothly, causing Elise to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing aloud.
“I’m sure she owes a great deal to you, Your Grace,” the earl said. “You took her in after her carriage broke down. Called in a doctor to tend to her injury.”
“Oh, it was more than that, Lord Ruthersby,” Weston said. “For some abominable reason, Lady Ruthersby was given an inferior carriage. One wheel came off and two others almost did. Then lightning struck a nearby tree, setting it ablaze. It toppled onto the carriage, crushing it.”
The couple gaped at Weston. Elise found she had to lower her gaze to her lap to hide the mirth she knew was in her eyes.
“I find it horrifying her ladyship and daughter had to suffer to this extent. However, it did give me the opportunity to get to know her. I have grown very fond of Lady Ruthersby.”
She grasped her hands tightly. Though Weston meant well, these words—coming from the Duke of Disrepute—would give her brother-in-law the absolutely wrong idea about their relationship.
“I see,” the earl said smugly.
“I don’t believe you do, my lord,” Weston said. “Meeting a woman of Lady Ruthersby’s elegance and refinement has convinced me that the time has come for me to settle down and seek a bride of my own. Her ladyship is mature and wise. I have asked her to help guide me through the swirling waters of the Marriage Mart and help me select my new duchess.”
Elise glanced up to see their startled looks.
“That means that Lady Ruthersby will need to come to London for the Season and participate fully in social events.”
The countess began shaking her head. “I am afraid that wouldn’t be possible, Your Grace. You see, she cares for our boys and—”
“And now a governess will, as would be expected,” Weston interrupted. “While I know of the deep affection between your boys and Lady Ruthersby, it would be inconvenient for me for her to be tied up with something hired help should attend to.” He smiled. “Of course, I would expect you and your husband to escort her to all of these affairs. Since I will need her advice on a daily basis, this means you will be invited to an immense number of events, hosted by the highest echelons of Polite Society. Would that be possible, my lady?”
Elise saw the glee break out on both of their faces.
“We would be most delighted to escort my sister-in-law to whatever events you wish her to attend, Your Grace. We certainly would never want you to be inconvenienced.”
“Good,” Weston said and then studied the pair. “If you wish, Ruthersby, I’ll give you my tailor’s name. I’m sure since you will be running in high circles that you might want to replenish your wardrobe. As for the two ladies, my sister, the Duchess of Colebourne, has an excellent modiste in London. She’s very particular about the clients she takes on but is willing to dress both ladies for the upcoming Season. Since I am asking for Lady Ruthersby’s advice and want her by my side, I will need her to be turned out especially well. I will pay for this wardrobe and that of your wife’s.”
The earl waved a hand. “Oh, that won’t be necessary, Your Grace. You are already doing so much for us. I cannot put you in such a position.”
“Very well. See that your wife and sister-in-law are outfitted in the finest of gowns.”
“Yes, Your Grace.”
“You’ll need to return to London early. Shall we say a month before the Season begins? That would give me time to introduce you about my various clubs and the modiste will have the time to work her magic. I’ll also give a dinner party, inviting my closest friends—Colebourne, Blackmore, Windham—and have you meet them before the Season begins.”
The countess’ eyes nearly popped from her head. “Four dukes at a dinner party? And us?” She smiled with glee. “Your Grace, you are a most generous man.”
“I try to be. As for Lady Ruthersby, you must treasure having her while you can. I’ve promised her in exchange for helping me find a wife, I will also help her to find a husband. That means she will no longer be living with you in the future. Another reason to hire that governess as quickly as possible.” He paused, pretending to think, but he didn’t fool Elise. “It would also be
