The Deputy and His Enforcer (Kincaid Pack #3) - Kiki Clark Page 0,85

but that only made Robson laugh harder.

“Get in,” Robson said, gesturing at the turned-down bed.

Snapping his teeth at his mate, Marcus leapt onto the bed and moved to the other side. Once Robson climbed in and started pulling the covers back up, Marcus turned and settled down next to him, resting his muzzle on Robson’s toned stomach, his instincts driving him to protect his mate’s most vulnerable spot while they slept.

Robson settled the sheet and comforter over them, then lifted them to look at Marcus with raised eyebrows. “You going to be okay down there?”

He chuffed and shut his eyes.

Thick fingers speared into the fur on his neck and scratched lightly. “Okay, cariño. Let me know if you need anything else.”

Even though he was tired, Robson lay in bed with a cuddly wolf for nearly an hour just staring at the ceiling and thinking about how much his life had changed in a matter of weeks. He wanted to laugh when he thought about how wrong he had been about Marcus and his friends and the insane theories he’d come up with about them.

Well, he hadn’t been completely wrong. Technically, he’d been right that they hadn’t notified the proper authorities about the murder of the witch… Agnes, he was pretty sure Marcus had said her name was. And while part of him still wanted to urge them to follow the law, it was a small part that was shrinking every day. The more he saw of the pack and learned about their laws and magic, the more he knew the human criminal justice system wouldn’t be able to deal with murdered witches sent as messages to alpha wolf shifters.

Seriously, his life was so weird now.

Marcus huffed and rearranged himself, digging his chin into Robson’s stomach in the process, but didn’t wake up. Robson peeked at him under the blankets but couldn’t make out much with the sun having set outside and no lights on in the room.

His poor, sweet Marcus. Robson didn’t know what a “villainous call” was, but whatever had happened today combined with his little bit of a meltdown in the kitchen had completely drained him.

Robson wondered if he’d always be on the outside looking in with the pack, only useful in comforting Marcus after the fact.

Sighing, he reached down and carded his fingers through the thick but soft fur on Marcus’s head and neck, smiling when he wiggled closer at the gentle touches. He supposed there were worse things in life.

He was just beginning to wonder if he should get up and find something to do since sleep was eluding him when he heard a loud vibration that had him sitting partially upright. He stared at where he’d left his pants halfway across the room, phone still tucked in the pocket. He thought about letting it go, but between work and his family, he was paranoid he’d miss something important.

As gently as he could, he eased out from underneath Marcus and slipped from the bed. By the time he’d pulled his phone out, the vibrations had stopped, but he realized quickly it hadn’t been his phone ringing. He had a couple of missed texts from his brother Rafael but no missed calls.

When he dug out Marcus’s, he saw there was a missed call and voicemail from Bennett Young. Glancing at the bed where his mate was nothing more than a lump under the covers, he decided not to bother him.

He stepped out of the bedroom and jogged down the steps, heading for the kitchen to grab a drink. He called B back on his own phone, not surprised when he answered right away.

“Robson? Is everything okay? I was trying to reach Marcus.”

“He’s sleeping. When I saw you left a message, I thought I should call and make sure you didn’t need him for some kind of emergency,” he said, making sure to keep his voice low so it hopefully wouldn’t disturb Marcus.

“No, nothing like that,” Bennett quickly said. “I was just… checking in, I guess. Making sure he was okay after today.”

Robson grunted as he filled a glass with water from the tap and took a drink. “Because of the phone call he got or because of that d-bag I taught a lesson to?”

B’s deep chuckle practically vibrated the phone in Robson’s hand. “Both, I suppose. Though Marcus seemed more than okay with how you handled that confrontation.”

Robson grinned. “Yeah, he did.”

Laughing again, Robson could just see the big guy shaking his head in exasperation. “Anyway. Did
