The Deputy and His Enforcer (Kincaid Pack #3) - Kiki Clark Page 0,34

frustration leaking from his pores. “But he’s… one of you guys?”

Marcus thought about that for a moment before answering. “Technically… yes, he’s part of the Kincaid Pack. But I wouldn’t count on his loyalty to the pack in any kind of emergency or if it no longer served his own needs and desires.”

Robson grunted and stared at where the truck had disappeared, hand still gripping the back of his neck and brows furrowed.

“Would you… would you like me to start from the beginning and explain things, or would you prefer to ask questions and have me answer them?” Marcus wasn’t sure what the best method was to reveal the magical world to a non-knowing human—he’d never had to do it before.

Sighing heavily, Robson turned and met Marcus’s eyes, though he wondered how well he could actually see Marcus in the dark. “From the beginning, but not here.”

Marcus looked around them, unsure where they could go since Robson’s home was full of his family members. And while Hector could be brought into the loop if Robson wanted, Marcus couldn’t reveal things to everyone in Robson’s family without approval first.

Chuckling, Robson slapped a hand on Marcus’s upper arm then headed for the passenger side of the SUV. “Get in, man. I know where we can go.”

Chapter Nine

“So let me get this straight,” Robson said, pointing at Marcus with his fry. They were sitting across from each other in a booth at Momma’s Kitchen. Robson was on his second order of fries, and he’d had to switch to water after his second coffee so he didn’t start getting jittery, but he was finally starting to see the larger picture of what was behind the scenes of Meyerville, Michigan. “Rick let that bitch-ass Enforcer who beat the shit out of his mate just walk away, and then that Gabriel dude kills him a few weeks ago when he tried to kill Bennett’s mate… Kieran, right?”

Marcus nodded. “It’s impressive how much information you’re retaining.”

Robson looked down at his mostly empty plate and bit his lip to stop himself from smiling. That wasn’t even a good compliment, but from Marcus… it seemed like it was. The more time Robson spent with him, the more he was beginning to see Marcus’s odd manners and speech patterns as endearing and less like he was deliberating trying to hide things and mislead Robson.

“Though,” Marcus continued, taking a sip of his own water. He’d declined to order any food, claiming he’d recently eaten dinner, but when Robson had pushed his huge plate of fries into the middle of the table, he hadn’t been surprised that Marcus had eaten some. “I feel as if I should point out that Alpha Kincaid didn’t simply ‘let’ the McAllister Enforcer walk away. He was attempting to prevent a larger problem with Alpha McAllister and the Council. Or he was after I… reminded him of that. Or else he probably would have sent the heads of that Enforcer and Alpha McAllister’s daughter back to Alpha McAllister in a box for laying their hands on Kai.”

Robson froze for a moment, then swallowed the fry in his mouth and took a sip of water. “You’re being very cavalier about talking to a cop about murder and assault and almost murder.”

Marcus’s head tipped to the side a little, and Robson’s belly fucking swooped. What the fuck? “I am not speaking to you as Deputy Medina. I am speaking to you as my— as Teresa’s brother. Teresa and Patrick are members of the pack, and you will more than likely be extended that same privilege should you choose to join now that you are aware of everything.”

Narrowing his eyes, Robson tapped the table between them with a finger. “That’s twice now one of you started to refer to me as something in reference to you. Explain.”

They’d been sitting in their booth talking for hours, and over the course of the conversation, Marcus had relaxed a little, his face actually forming some expressions and even smiling a few times at snarky comments Robson made. But as he watched, Marcus’s face completely shut down at Robson’s accusation.

“It was a slip of the tongue, nothing more.” Marcus took another sip, then raised the nearly empty glass so their server saw it was nearly empty. “What other questions do you have?”

Jabbing a fry into some ketchup, he scowled at Marcus. “The dead body that was reported?”

He waited until the server was finished refilling his glass and checking on them before responding. “Her name
