Demon's Trust (The Chronicles of Arcayos #1) - Raven Dark Page 0,41

wake you and have you make me dinner.”

Why the hell didn’t I get anything from him? That—a total lack of psychic phenomenon—has only happened once.

“You’re unreal. You do realize you’re a wanted man and you’re breaking and entering into a cop’s home.”

“I know.” His fists clench. “It gave me a hell of an energy boost.”

“Jesus Christ. You’re a certifiable wack job.”

“Seems to be the verdict going around. From your captain, at least.”

My brows shoot up to my hairline. “Wait a minute. An energy boost? So, your powers get stronger if you break the fucking law?”

“It’s more complicated than that, but you’re not far off.”

“Great.” How am I supposed to trust that he isn’t lying about killing demons if breaking the laws makes him stronger? If breaking into my apartment in the middle of the night while I slept gave him a boost, what would killing a human do?

“Are you aware that everyone in this city and every cop on the force knows what you look like?” I nod to the newspaper. “The detectives assigned to the case are all over it.”

“Concerned for me, my love?”

Oh my god, I hate him.

“Relax,” he says. “They don’t know what I am.” He looks at his lap. “It had to have been the demon,” he mutters.

“The one who got away?”

“I tried to find him. No luck so far.” His voice is a pissed off growl.

“What do you want, Arcayos?”

“All right.” He stands and strolls over to the living room window. “Enough fun and games, I suppose.” He turns to me and crosses his arms. “Sit down, Cassidy Morgan. I have something to tell you, and you are not going to like it.”

Sighing, I humor him and take a seat on the couch. He walks over and stands at the edge of it. “I discovered a few things about you today. I—”

He cuts himself off and his eyes veer to the TV.

“Va’halzoret take me.” He prowls to the couch and sits slowly down at my side, his eyes fixed to the screen.

Superman has just jumped out a window as Clark Kent transforms into the red and blue.

“Why did I not think of that before?” he whispers.

“What the hell are you talking about? Arcayos, what’s going on?”

He leans over, grabs my face and lays a hard, hot kiss on my lips. I shove at him, but he ignores it, his eyes filled with delight.

“Clark Kent, you’re a genius,” he says. “It’s perfect.”

“What’s perfect?” I snap.

He nods to the TV. “I need one of those.”

“One of what? A TV?”

He shakes his head, perched on the edge of the seat. His excitement is palpable. “That…. what do they call it in those comics I saw?” He snaps his fingers. “A secret identity.”

I gape at him. “You’re kidding. You’re telling me you’re going to pull a Clark Kent?”

“Yes.”

Oh, God. This is a disaster waiting to happen. I push off the couch, shaking my head. “You’ll get caught.”

“No, I won’t.” He smirks.

“Yes, you will, and you’ll get us both in a lot of trouble. Arcayos, this is real life, not a movie. It doesn’t matter how well you disguise yourself. Anyone who sees you will know it’s you. There is no pair of glasses or mask that can hide you well enough, and you’re too big not to notice.”

“I have no intention of using anything as foolish as a pair of glasses, my dear.”

“This is nuts. So, what, you’re going to become a reporter by day, demon slayer by night?” I can’t help letting a smile sneak in.

“No.” He pauses to think with such seriousness that I almost laugh. “I need to control the evidence before it ever gets to the media.”

I fling up my hands. “It doesn’t matter what you become, Arcayos. You’ll get yourself caught. And when you do, I’ll throw you in jail myself.”

His head swivels from the screen to me and then a slow smile pulls at his lips. “No, you won’t.”

Oh, shit. That smile worries me. “What the hell are you up to?”

“No one is getting caught, and no one is putting me in jail. In fact, I’m going to be the one putting people in jail, Cassidy Morgan.”

My heart gives a horrible jolt. “Ohhhh, no. Oh, no, no, no.”

“Yes. It’s perfect. I will be able to control the evidence and be close to the criminals who are most likely demons.”

“Jesus Christ. You’re telling me you’re going to become a police officer?”

“Yes.” He crosses his arms.

“Not on my force you’re not.”

“Why not?”

“Because.” I’m starting to
