Demon's Trust (The Chronicles of Arcayos #1) - Raven Dark Page 0,20
what?”
He cocks his head.
“It’s my job to protect this city, Arcayos. If you’re lying, it’s my neck on the line.”
He rushes me backward across the room. My back hits the door to my apartment with a thud. He sets his palms against the wall to either side of my head, his arms penning me in. His face is right above mine. The heat of him hammers into me, supercharged and making me feel light-headed.
Arcayos snatches a deep breath through his nose, his chest expanding heavily against mine. His expression clears.
“Listen to me, woman, because I am only going to tell you this once. I will do whatever it takes to protect you, whether you like it or not. What you think of me doesn’t change that. But my first loyalty is to Va’halzoret. Hazuldar and his forces are my first priority. I will not stop. I see a demon getting into evil, it dies. I find a human working with a demon, I deal with him. My rules, my way. If you get in my way, you will not like what happens.”
“Are you threatening me, Arcayos?”
“I will do a lot more than that if you interfere.”
“And just what is that supposed to mean?”
He draws back, but remains where he is. He’s pressed up against me so I can feel every inch of his muscled frame. Even the hard ridge of what feels like an enormous cock, stabbing at my belly.
Jesus, he must be hung like a fucking horse.
Adrenaline spears through me like fire. My knees wobble. My sex throbs until it almost hurts.
Chest heaving, I shove at him. “Back off.”
Arcayos only smirks. Except for those red eyes, his features become human again. He doesn’t move an inch. His eyes are locked on me, as if he’s expecting me to attack him.
I’m not that crazy. There’s nothing I can do against him. What exactly will he do to me if I tell anyone? He wouldn’t kill me after promising to protect me. So what would he do?
“Why are you protecting me?” I ask breathlessly. “Why me?”
His dark brows wing down. His gaze takes in my heaving chest, fixating on my mouth as I lick my lips. He scowls.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” I demand.
“This doesn’t make sense. How in Her Name did this happen?” His voice is gruff, his breathing ragged.
He lifts one hand and grips my jaw, pushing my head back. Watching me so intently that it’s unnerving.
“Hey. What are you—” My hand flies up, but he captures my wrist before my palm hits his face, pushing my wrist against the wall.
Arcayos’ head swoops in and his lips crush mine.
I make an angry noise against his mouth. His lips are like the rest of him—strong, rough, and hot as hell. He grips my hair in his fist, a rough, commanding hold, and his mouth sears mine as he pries my lips open with his.
The heat racing through my veins turns scorching. My knees weaken until I’m sure I’d fall to the floor if he weren’t pinning me to the door with his weight. I grip the front of his gi-like jacket, unsure if I’m trying to push him away or pull him closer.
Arcayos growls against my mouth and his tongue sweeps in, stealing a single lick.
He yanks himself back and releases me almost roughly. He spins away from me, and the noise he makes sounds like an animal, something between surprised and pissed off. With himself or with me?
“Why did you do that?” I snap, wiping the delicious taste of him from my lips. Adrenaline surges, feverishly hot. My body throbs with awareness of him, and I hate myself for it. Hate him for it.
Shaking his head, he crosses the room, picking up and swinging on his cloak.
“You didn’t answer me. Why are you protecting me?”
He straightens his cloak and turns to me. “I have told you all you need to know.”
“Far from it, pal.” He knows why those demons were after me, and if he’s keeping something like that from me, I can’t trust him. Just like with any other Tae’agul, I can’t trust a word he says.
The warrior crosses the room to the window, opens it, and glances over to me.
“Wait, what the hell are you doing? There’s no way down there, you’ll—”
“Don’t get in my way, Cassidy Morgan.” He snaps the hood of his cloak over his head. “Intervention will only hurt you. I’ll be watching you.”
