Darkmore Penitentiary 2 - Caroline Peckham Page 0,170

the dark where no one could see us. But what would really happen when we were standing beneath the light of the sun once more?

"The bricks are as loose as a leprechaun's g-string," plunger announced proudly and the sound of grating stone followed a moment before he tugged one of the large bricks out of the wall and the dim red lighting from the maintenance level spilled in to illuminate the darkness.

I kept my gaze firmly away from the loose, folding skin of the naked dude beside me and peered out with my heart pounding and a big ass grin on my face.

I could just make out the ipump over to the left of the hole we'd made and with the instructions Dante had sent me alongside the ingredients Sin and Ethan had gotten, I had everything I needed to contaminate the tank and neutralise the Order Suppressant for the riot when it was time for us to make our move.

This was really happening. In a few days, we'd be packing up and shipping out of Darkmore Penitentiary for good, and I for one was never going to look back.

W e’d made serious progress in the library this week. Plunger was working on the tunnel to the surface, gaining meter after meter and everyone’s mood was sky high as we drew closer to the day of escape.

I was painting the wall near to the hole where Plunger was digging. A bookcase was blocking it from view, though I still got a rush every time we were in here. I was excited. Fucking ecstatic. I wanted out of Darkmore so bad and ever since Rosa had turned up here, I felt like I’d been given a new lease of life. I wasn't alone anymore. And now I had a real future waiting for me beyond that tunnel. I just knew there were a few loose ends to tie up. Particularly when it came to Gustard. We had to deal with him. There was no way we could walk out of here and set that fucking serial killer loose on the world. I couldn't let that happen. And me and Rosa had been discussing ways to deal with him late into the night. If we could make sure he didn't leave with us, that was even better. Because the riskier option was having to deal with him during the escape. And though I didn't like to wet my hands in blood again, I would do it to rid the world of Gustard, and to ensure that he paid for everything he'd done to Rosa too.

Either way, he wasn't getting out of here. But an intelligent psychopath like him could not be underestimated. There was a reason he had such a high body count beyond these walls and that was his meticulous planning. I wouldn't have been surprised if there were far more bodies in the ground than the ones he had been sentenced for, never to be discovered.

Ethan crawled out of the tunnel, stretching his back and catching my eye. The tunnel widened out further inside so we could walk out of here, but now we were on a time limit, Plunger was focusing on digging as far as he could before the night we escaped, so it wouldn’t be as wide the further in we got. He'd still have to dig us a few hundred feet up to the surface when we ran but he'd have done the bulk of the work. His Order gifts would help him avoid the detectors in the ground so we could just sail on up to the free world. Now that the tunnel was completed down to maintenance, he was working as hard as he could to get as far as possible before it was show time.

"You wanna swap in for a while?" Ethan asked with a grimace. "I can't stand looking at that guy's hairy asshole any longer. Does he really need to be fucking naked while he works down there?"

My nose wrinkled and I shook my head. "Maybe we should get some boxers onto him, I saw a stapler by the front desk, we could make sure they stay in place."

Ethan chuckled darkly and I found myself smiling a little. Not that I liked the guy or anything. But for the sake of covering up Plunger's ball sack, I was willing to team up.

"I'll go." Rosa appeared around the corner, pulling her hair up and tying it into a knot to keep it
