step, and I wasn’t ready for you to find someone.”
Siena frowned at the phone. “I thought I would marry Kyle and move.” She pointed out the mistake she almost made.
“Nah, I never liked the douchebag. I planned to kill him way before you got that involved. Still wouldn’t mind breaking his ass out of jail and taking him out. He and his dad deserve long, painful deaths. They both copped plea deals for white-collar jail, which is like the hotel version of prison.”
Hudson hadn’t told Siena about the plea deals. “Does that mean they’ll get out early?” she asked, and her hands started to sweat. The thought of having to deal with Kyle again made her feel on edge.
“Sorry, I just found out about it in my briefing today with Xavier. Hudson probably hadn’t heard. Nope, Kyle won’t get out for another forty years, so you don’t have to worry about him coming after you. They were moved to the white-collar unit for telling Xavier how the trafficking took place. Last night, the team rescued eight kids and dismantled a large portion of the organization.”
“Were you on the raid?” Siena asked. “Is that the type of thing you do for a living?”
“I was home, guarding the women here. But normally, I would be on the raids or running missions. Tamara seems not to trust the men on the team, so they’re all staying with me until the government can come up with a plan. But I believe my boss is working something out in the background. He does a lot of closed-door meetings, which I’m glad I’m not a part of. I like the shooting and action but not the meeting shit. But back to the original question—are you going to come over or not?”
“I’m on my way over.” Siena ended the call and placed her phone to the side to tape another box.
Packing would go quicker with the ladies helping. Over the last few months, she’d started to enjoy her time with Yara. The woman was funny as hell, and she seemed to have a crush on Doc. The two Americans didn’t talk as much.
Siena typed Hudson a quick note saying she was running over to Angel’s to eat and they were going to help her finish packing. He wouldn’t get her message until later. She left her phone on the floor and grabbed her keys to head next door.
Siena walked the short path between the houses and raised her hand, but the door swung open before she could knock.
“Tamara?” Siena asked.
Tamara’s eyes widened, then her face went blank. “I was going for a quick walk.” She pushed herself out the door, shoving Siena to the side.
She was halfway down the driveway before she thought to ask if Tamara should have someone with her. Siena walked into the house to find Angel and the other two women in the kitchen, laughing and drinking wine. “Hey, I’m not sure if it’s my place to ask, but should Tamara be going for a walk alone?”
“Fuck,” Angel said. “No, but it’s not the first time she did this. Whenever we start having fun, she shuts down and escapes. I hate that these women need to be guarded, but we don’t know if Abida will come for them.”
Yara grimaced. “I sure as hell don’t want to go back to Yemen. For years, I worked to find a way out of that country. My plan was coming together when the raid happened. I’m willing to tell the government anything they want so I can start over. Preferably in America. I don’t have a job or money, but I can find a way.”
“I agree with Yara. I’ll tell them whatever they want to know. I spent most of my time locked away. Abida always thought I was going to run, and I totally would’ve if given a chance. Now I just want this all over and to see my family, but it’s going to be hard. Xavier found my parents and brother, all still alive, but I was taken at the age of ten. I understand why he wants me to wait to call my parents, but it’s killing me. I want to go home, even though I know it’s going to be hard to adjust.”
They were looking at each other when the front door opened. Siena took a sip of wine and then heard Yara scream. Three men were standing with guns pointed at them, and Tamara was next to them with a smirk
