Dangerous Rescue - Linzi Baxter Page 0,28
she missed his touch. She followed him out of the bedroom down the hall, where Gumby stood next to Sidney. Mia was telling them her life story. Gumby had a smile on his face, and Sidney knelt down, listening to every word coming out of the girl’s mouth.
Hudson wrapped his arm around her again and drew her close. “She reminds me of you,” he whispered before stepping back.
Sidney stood up. “I figured it might be easier if I come over here for the day. If you guys don't mind.”
Hudson said his goodbyes, and Gumby followed him out the door. Siena kissed her daughter goodbye and headed outside. Hudson’s truck was gone.
Gumby stood next to her car. “If you see anything strange at work today, call the number Hudson gave you. Cy will contact me immediately. Don’t mess around with your ex. This is dangerous. We also placed a call to the police department to figure out how your ex was released without you getting notification.”
“Thank you for all of this. If you don’t mind, I would like to make you and your wife dinner tonight.”
Gumby’s lip twitched. “I would take you up on that, but we’re inviting a few people over to get to know you. These are people who will keep an eye on everything. If you want to bring a salad, that’s fine, but come join us tonight.”
“So you’re not going to tell me how you know Kaiden’s uncle? And don’t even try to deny the fact you know that sexy man. God, what I wouldn’t do for one free night away from my husband for him. I bet he could press you against the wall and not even strain a muscle.”
Siena sighed. “I’m not going to have sex with Hudson. Furthermore, your husband worships the ground you walk on. So no, Becky, you’re not going to sleep with Hudson.”
“Still didn’t answer the question. How do you know the man? The second you saw him walking toward us, you changed. And after you finished talking to him, you bolted out of here like you were about to get a free frosty from Wendy’s.”
“Hey, don’t put down the frosty.” During college, Becky and she would do late night frosty runs once a week. It was the one guilty pleasure Siena allowed herself. Now she barely allowed that. Years of modeling had made her very conscientious about what she put in her body.
She tried not to let the weight she’d gained over the years bother her, but she’d started modeling at an early age, and so many things were ingrained in her brain. Most people didn’t understand that the things children were told and lectured about shaped them and stayed in their minds. For a long time, Siena had gone to a therapist to help overcome her eating disorder. Modeling had given her the ability to be financially free, but it wasn’t something she ever wanted Mia to go through.
“The frosty would be nice. But you’re not going to drop this until I tell you the reason I know Hudson, are you?”
Becky shook her head.
“Fine. Hudson is Mia’s dad.”
Her friend pulled out the chair next to her in the teachers’ lounge. It was lunchtime, and they were the only two in the back room. A majority of the teachers ate in their offices or left the premises to grab food. Siena always liked going to the teachers’ lounge for a change. If she stayed in her room and ate, the day would seem like it took forever, or she would end up helping a student during the break. She didn’t mind helping them, but she preferred to stay after for that. But staying after was how I ended up finding my ex cooking meth in the school.
“You already slept with the big sexy man,” Becky whispered. “I thought Mia’s dad died or was in jail. Hell, I even thought once he might be some bigwig in the modeling agencies. But Hudson—girl, you know how to pick sexy men. So, how did the reunion go?”
For the next twenty minutes, she told her friend about how she’d met Hudson, the whirlwind romance, and the way he’d left her to raise Kaiden. She didn’t tell Becky that her ex was out of jail or that she had a bounty on her head. Or that her next-door neighbor was an assassin. Jesus, my life feels like the eye of a hurricane heading for the Bermuda Triangle.
“If you’re wondering if we had sex…no. I’m not
