Dangerous Rescue - Linzi Baxter Page 0,15
when she said everything was okay.
“Grim is one of the deadliest people I know,” Hudson explained. “And someone put a reward out for you, alive. You’re not safe staying at your place.”
“I have no clue who Grim is, and I’m not sure I believe you about the reward.”
“I already knew about the reward,” Angel said. “Two days ago, I had cameras installed at her house, and I have eyes on her.”
“Where were those eyes earlier when she was accosted at work, Grim?” he asked.
Siena sat down on the barstool and pinched her brow. “Can someone start from the beginning? Because it sounds like both of you invaded my privacy, and I don’t understand how Angel could do that when she’s a real estate agent.”
For the first time, her friend's icy composure melted. She glared at Hudson. “Casper here blew my cover. Nobody is supposed to know about my job. Everyone I know thinks I work for a real estate agent. I don't lie to keep things private—I do it to keep everyone safe. My job deals with some bad people in the world. As for what I do, I work for a security company.”
“Mercenary,” Hudson mumbled.
She ignored his comment and continued to talk. “I have a program that runs on the dark web with the names of all the people I care about, just in case someone finds out about my cover and goes after my friends and family. It was never put in place to invade your privacy. I knew about the reward, but didn’t know why it was put on you until tonight.”
What the hell? My sweet friend is a mercenary. How is that even possible?
Angel was only five two and thin as a rail. She got up and ran five miles each morning before Siena even had time to drink her coffee. Now Siena had to believe she was a mercenary.
“You didn’t think to tell me about it earlier when I mentioned that my ex came after me?” Siena asked.
“No, because I planned to have you stay at my house, and I set up motion cameras. As for your ex, something is off because I have a monitor on him, and nothing came through. When you went to pack, I made a call, and I have a few people looking into him. You’re safe here.”
Hudson snorted. “Really, I’m more worried about you than the person who put out the reward. Don’t think I forgot what you did last month.”
Angel giggled. “Are you going to write that on a slip of paper and put it on my car? Jesus, it was a mission. One sanctioned a lot higher than your security clearance. You’re just upset you got beat by a girl.”
“You gave me a black eye. There was no reason for it.”
Siena couldn’t imagine her sweet friend taking a shot at Hudson. The man was twice her size and had more than a hundred pounds on her. But at the moment, she didn’t understand anything. Her friend had lied. Her ex was standing in the same room with her while she was wearing a white tank top, no bra, and a pair of shorts.
When she glanced at him, his blue eyes sliced through her. He wore his signature black T-shirt and jeans. The colorful tattoos on his forearms showed. He’d added a few more over the years. She wanted to run her fingers over the images and ask him about the new ones.
“Did you hear a thing I said?” Hudson asked.
No, she’d zoned out and was too busy eyeing his sexy arms. “This is a lot to take in. Now, you want to explain why you showed up at my place? I told you I was staying at a friend's house. What made you still come here? Did you not believe me?”
She’d never lied to him. Honesty was one of the things she demanded out of a relationship. Hudson blushed and looked down at his phone. She wondered if he was working to come up with a lie about why he’d come to her house.
“I have to ship out tomorrow, and I needed to let you know what I found. You are not safe here. Staying next door isn’t going to be much different from staying at your house.”
He hadn’t answered her earlier question. “How did you track me?”
Angel smiled and rested her hip against the counter. Siena was still mad at her for keeping secrets. Yes, she understood keeping her job private, but the fact she’d put
