A Crown Of Fire And Wrath (The Shadow Walkers Saga #5) - Sloane Murphy Page 0,83
the stove before stopping and turning to watch me. “You promise me you will eat properly until I return. A girl needs to keep her energy up. If you don’t eat, I will know.” She waves her wooden spoon at me, and I move towards her and wrap her in a hug. She freezes for a moment before returning it.
“I promise, Nonnie. You don’t need to worry about me. I love to eat. The guys won’t let me go hungry. They’re as good as you are at making sure I look after myself.” I wink at her and she scoffs.
“These boys, they don’t know what they’re doing. I cannot go.”
“Nonnie, you must go. It would make me so very sad to know I was the reason you were not with your family. Please, trust me. I will make sure to take care of myself until you can come back to us, okay?”
“As long as you are sure, I would hate to see something happen to you, Remy girl.” She hugs me tight and then looks over to Kain. “I am already packed, if everything is okay here, I would like to go home very soon.”
“I will sort out arrangements for you now,” Kain tells her with a small smile, before she bustles out of the kitchen.
I let out a deep sigh and slump into one of the stools at the island counter, then Roman’s and Michael’s voices filter into the kitchen, and they both arrive not long after. Their t-shirts both have evidence of their morning’s work, but I guess they mostly cleaned up before they came up here.
“I see you’ve both had a good morning,” Levi says, an eyebrow quirked.
“Fun, yes. Productive, not so much,” Roman says as he and Michael sit at the table. It’s very strange seeing him here in our space with my guys. Especially Roman. I thought they’d be the least likely of friends, considering Roman’s tendency to be an asshole first, and think about the consequences of it later.
“So he didn’t say anything?” Levi asks almost smugly as he looks to Michael.
“Not yet,” Michael tells us. “But I have plenty of other ways to make someone talk. And if all that fails, then I have my ultimate trick.”
“You’ll look inside his mind?” I ask
“I will,” Michael confirms.
“Why not just do that first?” Kain asks.
“Because if people have too many defenses, and you have to break through them, it can break the person’s mind. Which means what you see isn’t always reliable,” Michael explains. “Angels and humans are the easiest for me to read, followed by Hunters as a hybrid. Witches and Lycans are harder, they’re from a different kind of magic to mine. Dracul and demons are the hardest. Nothing is impossible, I’d just rather not use it if we don’t have to.”
Kain looks a little comforted by Michael’s explanation, I guess the thought of having him inside of his head isn’t all that comforting, not that he has anything to hide, but still I get it. It’s why I never really resented the other angels’ fear of me. I mean, they didn’t know me, they had no way to know there was no way I would pry inside their minds. Fear is a powerful thing.
“That makes sense.” Kain nods. “Well, if you guys have things handled here, I’m going to take Nonnie to the Laveaus and portal her home.” He strides across to me and kisses me softly. “I’ll be home later tonight, okay?”
“Okay,” I say with a smile and kiss him again. He adjusts his tie once he steps back from me, not that it needed doing, even with running in here, he was perfectly put together, not a hair out of place. I watch him as he goes, and I feel my cheeks heat when I realize everyone is watching me stare as his extremely biteable ass as he walks away from me.
“Well, we should eat, grab a bottle of water for Laurent, and head back downstairs,” Roman says, clapping his hands together once.
“Nonnie made lasagna. It’s in the oven,” I tell him, and he grants me a huge smile.
“I do love some lasagna,” Roman says, rubbing his stomach.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had it,” Michal comments, and we all just look at him in shock.
“You’ve never had lasagna?” I ask.
“No, I don’t think so.” He shakes his head.
“Oh my fates. You are about to experience heaven in your mouth.” I grin as Roman plates up two portions, grabs two forks,
