least a dozen brothers standing around with their arms crossed.

“Sir, please, you have to be seen,” the nurse tried again.

Griz stepped forward. “He’ll be seen when he knows more about his father.”

The nurse took a step back, suddenly pale. He nodded. “I’ll go find out.”

“You do that,” I bit out. When he was gone, I said, “Griz?”

“Blue’s gettin’ your mum and siblin’s. Killer’s called Gamer. He’s bringin’ in Nancy and pickin’ up Maya on the way. She was out. They’ll all be here soon.”

I shook his head. “That’s not what I wanna hear.”

“Kid, you gotta be strong for your mum. She’s gonna lose it.”

My jaw clenched when I ground down hard on my teeth. “Griz.”

Griz ran a hand over his face and sighed. “He stopped breathin’ on the way here. They got him goin’ again, but it…. Fuck, brother, it really doesn’t look good.”

Channa circled her hand around my elbow and moved her other to around my waist. Giving me her strength. My throat clogged, and I swallowed over and over.

I nodded as tears filled my eyes, but I quickly blinked them away. “I’ll sit and wait for Mum to get here.”

“Coyote,” Vicious called as he stepped up. “The cops are here, but Vi’s out the front with Warden dealin’ with it.”

Good. Violet would be able to deal with all the shit so we wouldn’t have to.

Once more, I nodded, and Vicious’s eyes dropped to Channa. “Don’t worry about them, yeah?”

“Um, okay.” She shrugged, obviously unsure what Vi could do.

“The women will be here soon to rally,” he added.

I clasped him on the shoulder before I moved over to a row of seats and sat. The brothers gathered around us, facing away from us, giving me and Channa a moment and protecting us from prying eyes. If I didn’t feel gutted on the inside—hollow—I would have appreciated it more than I did.

Instead, I sat there with Channa, staring down at her hand in mine, all the while praying my dad would pull through.

Fuck, please, God, make it happen.

Zara

A knock sounded on the front door. We hadn’t been home long from seeing Channa at work. A smile formed on my lips thinking how thrilled I was to see Cody so happy. Channa was perfect for him. She reminded me a little of myself, but I would never say that to him.

Opening the door, my smile grew. “Hi, Blue—” It dropped away when I took in Blue’s pained face. Alarms blasted straight to my heart. I gripped at my chest when I asked, “What’s happened?”

“Darlin’, it’s Talon and Cody.” His tone was too soft, too careful.

I stepped back, shook my head again and again. I blinked at the wetness filling my eyes. “No,” I uttered. “No.”

Blue reached out for me, but I backed up. “Zara, they were shot. Coyote’s good, but…. They’re at the hospital. We need to get you there.”

I shook my head. “Blue—”

“Zara, we have to go.”

“Mum, what’s going on?” I spun around to find Drake standing in the hallway from the kitchen. He saw something in my expression and raced forward. “Ruby,” he bellowed. My son, my beautiful boy, hugged me to him. “Blue, what the fuck happened?”

“Fuck, kid, your dad and brother are in hospital. They were shot. Coyote’ll need you guys there. Your dad… he’s bein’ worked on. Get your sister. We need to go.”

I was supposed to be the strong one. I was supposed to take care of my family.

But all I could think was that my world was about to end. All I could picture was my man, my husband, and my child being shot.

Drake tensed, but then he turned his head and yelled for his sister again. “Blue, Ruby has Dillon here.”

“Get him to come. He’ll be there for her.”

“Drake?” Ruby called, and I lifted my head to see my baby girl running into the room with Dillon right behind her. She took in Blue, Drake, and then me in Drake’s arms. I should have let go of my son, stood tall, and gone to her, but I couldn’t. All I could do was hold onto my son.

She covered her mouth with a shaking hand. “Mum?”

“Dillon, run and get Ruby’s things. We’ve got to go,” Drake demanded.

“Where?” Ruby asked. Dillon rested his hands on her shoulders, sensing and probably seeing it was something bad, and even before she knew anything, her eyes were filling with tears.

“Dillon, do it,” Drake ordered.

Dillon rushed back down the hall, and I got myself together enough to open an
