anything? A cool cloth? A drink? Pain meds?”

He grunted. “I’ll take all of them.” He paused a beat. “Please.”

Darn, I probably should have asked him as soon as we got in. “No problem,” I said softly, and then went down the hall to my bathroom. I closed the door after myself and called Denise.

“What’s wrong?”

“I can’t make it into work, honey. An accident happened right out front of my place, and I have to stay for… um, to give them answers. I’m so sorry to ask this, but can you go in and get the bread and rolls in the oven?”

“Of course, babe. I’m getting up right now and will be there soon. Do you want me to stop in—”

“No! Ah, thank you, though.” I couldn’t risk pulling Denise into this, not when she had a daughter to take care of. “Will Mrs Bishop be okay coming in to watch Mariana?”

“Yeah, she won’t care. She’s probably already up watching her shows or feeding her horde. Don’t stress, okay? I’ve got this. I’ll see you when you get in.”

“Thank you, Denise, you’re a lifesaver.”

“Any time.” And she would. She’d do anything for anybody in need. I hated having to do this to her, but I didn’t know anyone else who knew how to do what I did. I’d shown Denise in case something happened, but now I felt guilty for asking her since she had Mariana to take care of. I would have to find a part-time or casual person I could teach who could fill in for me. Honestly, I’d been lucky so far. I hadn’t been sick with anything, so I could keep the bakery up and running.

After grabbing what I needed, I made my way back down the hall and over to Texas. “Do you think your, um, brother will be able to get your bike off the road, or should I go out and do it?” I asked, handing him the pain medication and cool pack.

I went into the kitchen for the drink and brought it back out when he answered, “They can do it. They shouldn’t be too far away.”

The dogs jerked towards the door just before I heard another rumble of bikes.

I rested a hand against my stomach with the sudden swirling inside. I hoped it didn’t follow through with anything, like a fart. Harley and Coco growled when we heard the heavy footfalls on the front porch. My heart beat so hard I was surprised I couldn’t see it when I looked down at my chest.

“Honey,” Texas called. “Relax, you got nothin’ to worry about.”

I hummed under my breath and only jumped a little when a loud knock dropped on the front door. The dogs started barking until I called, “Heel.” Moving over to the door, I caught their eyes and pointed over near Texas. “Back.” They shifted away from the door and sat in front of Texas. Sucking in a deep breath, I opened the door and gulped.

Satan, take me now.

In the door stood a man much taller than me, which wasn’t hard because I wasn’t the tallest person. He was tall, broad, bearded, with tattoos on his arms under his tee, and all I could think was that he had to be cold. I was also slightly scared by his intense eyes.

“Here for Texas,” he stated. I nodded and moved to the side; it was then I realized there were four others with him.

“Fuck, Dodge, what’re you doin’ here?” Texas asked.

“Just got to town when Ruin got the call.”

When the last one entered, I closed the door and shifted over to my dogs, who’d started growling when the man named Dodge got too close to Texas.

“Coco, Harley, here,” I commanded from the doorway into the kitchen. They trotted over and sat in front of me, their eyes trained on all the men.

I took in the others, like they did me. Only when I saw a certain dark head of hair, my eyes widened for a second and a squeak escaped me before I could thin my lips and blank my expression. I quickly looked back to Texas.

Cody Marcus was in my house.

Cody bloody Marcus.

Snap me in half and stuff me down the toilet. I’d forgotten he was a part of the Hawks.

Oh Lord. Lordy, Lord, Lord. I was going to throw up. Right there in front of a bunch of tough bikers. I was going to blow chunks at their feet and probably all over my dogs. I could run and hide
