Coyote (Hawks MC Next Generation #1) - Lila Rose Page 0,74

I asked Zara.

She nodded. “You got it, and thank you again for this. The kids have been so excited, even though they’ve tried their best not to show it. Apparently, it’s uncool to show excitement.”

Smiling, I shrugged. “It’s just a bakery.”

She shook her head. “Yes, it is, but you have to have talent to be able to bake like you do.” With that, she turned and went to the table.

It wasn’t Zara who dropped back with the order though; it was Drake. He leaned his elbows onto the counter and smirked at me. After he told what everyone wanted, he drew out, “So…” I was sure I knew what was coming. He liked to tease and also annoy his brother.

“No, Drake, I won’t leave Cody for you. Besides the fact you’re too young, I do have these warm and fuzzy feelings for your brother.”

He screwed up his nose. “Seriously? Warm and fuzzy?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

He sighed. “Fine. I guess I’ll live with you being my sister-in-law instead of my woman.”

I pulled my hands up in front of me and waved them. “Whoa, hold up there. You’re jumping a bit too far ahead.”

Drake chuckled. “Yeah, right. Wait until I tell Coyote you’ve got warm and fuzzies for him.”

“Drake,” I growled. “If you say one word to him, you’ll never eat anything I bake again.”

His eyes widened. “You’re kidding, right?”

Crossing my arms over my chest, I shook my head. “Nope.”

He lifted his fingers to his lips and zipped across them. “Won’t say a word.”

I grinned. “Good. Can you take that tray over, and I’ll help Denise with the drinks?”

“You got it.”

It was after the teens had eaten their first round of cakes, and they were back up at the counter picking another, when Zara turned to me and took my hand.

Concern had my belly dipping. “Are you okay?” I asked.

Her smile was soft. “I’m fine.” She patted my hand before picking up her mug of coffee. “I just wanted to touch on something.”

“Anything,” I told her.

“I never thought I would be where I am. Married to a biker. In fact, I dodged Talon for two years before he’d had enough and pushed into my life. I was scared of many things, but most of all, what it meant being with a man whose life is with the club. It’s different, but if you stick with them, they love with everything they have. They would give you the world if they could. There’ll be hard times. God knows Talon drives me crazy, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.” She smiled. “All I’m saying is that sometimes it might be overwhelming, but it’s worth it.”

Placing my hand on her arm, I nodded. “I know it will be.” I shook my head. “I know Cody will be worth staying strong with.”

Tears filled her eyes. “You’ll be good for him.”

My own welled. “He’s good for me.”

“Are you two gonna start crying and huggin’? ’Cause if you are, I’ll take my cake to go,” Drake said, sitting down with a vanilla slice.

Our tears turned into humour as we both laughed.

I honestly felt very lucky.

Cody’s family stayed for another half an hour. I enjoyed the moments they were there, as it showed me how rich Cody’s life was with them all in it. Not exactly Dillon, but he was proving himself, and I hoped he did stick around for the long haul because I saw great things with Ruby and Dillon. He’d gained a lot of respect when he stuck up for Ruby when Drake talked smack. But, of course, he was still going to get taunted by the older Marcus men. Still, he was a sweetheart. He pulled out her chair, opened the door for them all, and I could tell even when they ran out of things to whisper to each other about, they were relaxed in each other’s company.

Drake made me laugh many times, and I knew, even with all the hell he gave to his sister, he did it out of love.

When I turned from the front door, I caught Denise’s smile and returned it with my own.

“They’re amazing,” she commented. “Though Drake’s going to be a ladies’ man when he’s older.”

I snorted. “He already is. I honestly can’t believe how great Cody’s family is. He’s very lucky.”

She poked me in the stomach as I passed. “So are you, because anyone can tell they think the world of you.”

My smile wouldn’t leave. “You think so?” I asked, even though I was pretty sure she
