be in too much pain to do anything to me. Usually this neighbourhood was quiet, peaceful, and all in one morning it went to hell, for me at least, because of him.

Still wary, I kept an eye on him while I crouched to run my hands over Coco. She seemed okay. She didn’t flinch or nip at me when I pressed in places.

“Why’d you help?”

Straightening, I shrugged. “I didn’t want your death on my conscience when I could help.”

He snorted. “Can I ask one more favour?”

“Do you want me to call an ambulance?”

He shook his head, cringing. “Nah, but I do need you to call someone.”

“Who?”

“Brother.”

Brother? I could do that. I would be safe since I did help him out, so his brother wasn’t going to be pissed at me.

“All right.” I nodded, then bit my bottom lip. Did I leave him out here while I went to grab my phone or take him in case those douches dropped back with friends? That thought twisted my insides. What would I do with Coco and Harley while I was at work? Also, thinking of work, I cursed the darkened sky because I was late; everything was going to be delayed, and Stanley was going to be a pain in the arse about it. Sighing, I said, “You should come in while we call.”

I hoped he’d refuse, but he could have been thinking along the lines I’d been because he nodded. With a few groans and grunts, he managed to get to his feet but swayed. Cursing under my breath, I made my way over to him and slid an arm around his waist.

“Lean on me,” I said.

He did, which told me how much pain he was actually in. Slowly, we walked towards the house with my babies following.

Once inside, I helped the man sit on the couch and went into the kitchen where my mobile was. “What number am I calling and what name do I give them?” Under the light, I saw just who sat on the couch and gulped. He was a big man, really wide and tall with long hair in a bun and tattooed hands. I expected they ran up his arms under his long-sleeved, dirty Henley. He had a neatly trimmed beard and moustache on his bruised and cut face. A face that, even with the scrapes, was good-looking.

“The brother’s a member of the Hawks MC.” Screw me in the arse. He had a brother in a biker club. He must have seen my widened gaze because he quickly added, “You don’t need to fear me or him, honey. Promise.” He then rattled off a number, and added, “Name’s Texas.”

Nodding, I pressed in the numbers and told the dogs to guard, which Texas smirked at before he rested his head back against the couch. I went into the kitchen and held my wrist since my hands had started shaking. The adrenaline had started to wear off.

“Who’s this?” was demanded darkly into the phone.

Since Texas didn’t give me the name of his brother, I said over the phone, “I have Texas in my house after he was in a crash and was jumped. He didn’t want an ambulance and asked me to call you.”

“Where do you live?” he asked shortly. I told him the details, and the last thing he said before hanging up was “We’ll be there soon.”

We?

Who was we?

I didn’t agree on more people than just his brother. Oh shit. Did Texas actually mean a blood brother or one of his brother biker friends? I could have kicked myself in the cooch for not asking more questions. My pulse raced, but I had to remind myself no harm would come to me because I had stepped in and helped their brother.

When I stepped back into the living room, Texas opened his eyes and they landed on me.

“He said they’re on the way.” I paused and flicked my gaze to my babies, who were sitting in front of Texas watching him.

“You’ll be safe with them, with my brothers,” Texas reassured me, but my belly didn’t feel like I could believe it completely since I was sure he meant biker brothers, not blood related. He cleared his throat. “Trust me.”

But I couldn’t. I didn’t know the guy. Instead, I said nothing.

His lips twitched and he nodded towards the dogs. “They’re good.”

Warmth rushed through me as I dropped my eyes to my babies. “Yeah, they are. The best, really.” I licked my dry lips. “Um, do you need
