guys.” He turned to me, his eyes shining with mischief. “Unless you wanna see how a real man kisses?”

Cody, who sat beside me, went to stand, but I gripped his arm and told Drake, “Cody’s already shown me. I’m fine.”

Cody laughed and put an arm around my shoulders. “Burn, brother.”

Drake rolled his eyes. He didn’t seem to mind since he was still smiling.

“Everything looks delicious, Zara,” I said, taking in all the salads, plus baked potatoes, to go along with the meat.

“Thanks, Channa.” She sat beside Talon and waved at the table. “Everyone, eat up.”

We did. Well, I was going to, but Cody grabbed my plate from under me and asked, “Anythin’ you don’t eat?”

The sweet move got me all gooey on the inside. Smiling, I said, “I’ll eat anything. Thanks.”

He winked, and I happened to look around the table and caught Zara’s pride shining in her eyes for Cody.

“Where’s Maya tonight?” Cody asked.

Zara jolted a little, blinking, but it was Talon who answered, “She couldn’t get outta her shift. But she should be home around ten.”

“We’ll have to jet around eight thirty. Channa’s gotta be up at three.”

“In the mornin’?” Drake asked, shock evident in his tone.

Laughing, I nodded, and as Cody placed my full plate down in front of me, I explained, “I own and run a bakery. I have to be up early to do the baking.”

“No shit,” Drake said in awe.

“Drake,” Zara warned.

“Yeah, sorry, Mum. But I mean, I tried the stuff in the boxes before and they were the bomb. Can I come to the bakery one time?”

“Me too,” Ruby said.

I glanced to Zara. She smiled. “It’s fine with me.”

“I would love to have you in there. But there’s no paying for food.”

“Wicked, free food.” He pointed at Cody. “Bro, you picked damn well.”

Cody chuckled, rested his hand on my neck, and applied pressure. “I think so.”

“Hell yeah.”

“I’d like to come as well,” Dillon said quietly.

“We can go together,” Ruby announced, and Dillon beamed at her. It faded as soon as he saw Talon leaned forward in his seat, glaring.

Since I was new as well, I felt I had to come to the rescue. “That would be great, Dillon.” I smiled and heard Talon’s snort. I then added, “I’ll organise with Zara when the best time would be.”

“Awesome,” Drake replied. Ruby gave me a sweet smile and mouthed, “Thank you.” It seemed I was definitely in her good graces.

“I’ll make sure to be there as well,” Cody put in, before leaning into me and kissing my temple, where he whispered, “Know what you’re doin’, angel.”

Turning to him, I widened my eyes and said, “What?” There was no way I was going to tell him when Zara and I would set it up for. Dillon was being a champ putting up with the overprotective men in the family already. I was sure he’d love some time with Ruby without them around. Well, besides at school.

Cody smirked and shook his head at me. I turned back to my food, but I didn’t miss the look Cody shared with his father. One I didn’t understand but wished I could read.

The meal was amazing, and in the end, I didn’t need to worry about dessert. Everyone loved the treats. The company was even better, and I couldn’t believe how comfortable I felt sitting and getting to know Cody’s family.

It wasn’t until we were sitting in the living room, and after Cody and I helped Zara and Talon clean up when we all heard a crash down the hall.

“You motherfucker,” Drake yelled.

“Drake, stop it,” Ruby screamed before there was a thump.

Zara and I shared a look of horror before all of us were up off our seats and making our way down the hall. All I could think was poor Dillon.

Talon entered first, then Zara, and I heard her gasp. Cody followed in, stopping just inside the doorway to what looked like a games room with a pool table, bean bags, television, a big one at that, and some pinball machines. Cody hooked his arm around my waist and pulled me in front of him.

My attention went to the kids in the room, and my eyes widened. What I expected to see wasn’t it. Dillon was in one piece. It was Drake who had a bloody nose.

Dillon’s gaze dropped to the floor. “Sir, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t you dare apologize,” Ruby said. “Drake was being a dick.”

Talon crossed his arms over his chest. “What the fuck happened?”

No one said anything. Ruby looked
