room and grinned. “Awesome, you went with the knives.”

“Drake, shut up! Dad, you are not threatening Dillon with them.”

“Dillon? That’s the douche’s name?” Cody commented, and I elbowed him.

“What is with all the yelling?” Zara asked as she walked down the hall behind the living room. She wiped her hands on an apron and smiled warmly when she spotted us. “Channa, Cody, you made it.”

“Are we late?” I blurted.

“Mum, can’t you see why they’re late? They’ve been making out in the car,” Drake announced, and my cheeks flamed to life. Drake chuckled. “Can’t say I blame him. You got a babe there, Coyote. Good on you.” Drake shuffled forward with his hand outstretched. “Hey, I’m Drake, the better brother. One you can trade up to whenever you want to get rid of this loser.” He lifted his other hand up to the side of his head in a phone action. “Call me.”

I choked on a laugh.

Cody slapped his brother’s hand away and thrust the boxes at him. “Take them to the kitchen before I kick your arse, dickhead.”

Drake, not seeming to fear for his life, grinned and winked at me. “Will do, bro.”

Ruby moved forward with her hand out to me. “It’s nice to meet you, Channa. I’m Ruby. Cody’s little sister, and twin to the idiot in the kitchen.”

“Nice to meet you,” I said, and added in a whisper, “Good luck for tonight.”

“Thank you,” she mouthed, and I turned to Zara, who stepped close to bring me into a hug, which I found sweet. A pang of loss for my mother also touched my heart. As soon as Zara finished saying hello and hugging Cody, Ruby grabbed her hand and turned her to face Talon. “Mum, did you see what Dad’s doing?”

Zara’s eyes widened. “No!”

Cody brought an arm around my chest and pulled me back into him, where he leaned close and whispered, “It’s a madhouse, but I wouldn’t change it.”

I wouldn’t either if I were him. Even though my pulse raced with all the action going on, I loved every second of it.

Talon grinned, and I could imagine many women would swoon over it. “Kitten,” he purred. “I’m just playin’. If the little punk can’t take it, then he ain’t for our baby girl.”

Zara’s eyes softened a little when Talon called her kitten, but she shook her head. “Honey, we are not coming across as the crazy family in front of two guests. Did you even say hello to Channa?”

“Hey, Channa,” he said with a chin lift. “Good to see you again.”

A knock sounded on the front door. I tensed. Ruby’s eyes shot wide and filled with horror as she stared down at the knives.

“Dad, hide those knives,” Ruby hissed. Talon crossed his arms over his chest and smirked at his daughter. “Mum,” she whined.

“Talon Marcus,” Zara snapped low as she walked over to him.

Another knock sounded on the front door.

Drake raced from the kitchen. “Wait for me.”

“I’ll get the door,” Cody said, and I caught the evil glint to his eyes. Drake rubbed his hands together, while Talon just kept on grinning. The whole thing was starting to worry me.

“No!” I blurted a little too loudly. “I’ll get the door,” I told Cody and shoved him back out of the way. Ruby seemed pleased by this, but I wasn’t sure if I was just holding off the inevitable. Swallowing thickly from nerves for not only me but Dillon, I opened the front door and stuck my head out. “Hi,” I greeted the young man dressed in jeans and a black shirt holding two bunches of flowers. He was good-looking, even with his long hair. I could understand why Ruby didn’t want this to fail. Especially when he smiled shyly.

“Hi, I’m Dillon. Here to have dinner with Ruby.”

I nodded and leaned a little further out.

“What’s she sayin’?” Talon asked behind me.

“Channa,” Cody warned.

“Whatever they throw at you, just take it on. They won’t hurt you or the women will kill them.”

He gulped and looked a little pale now. “Okay,” he whispered.

“Great.” I opened the door and explained, “Don’t worry, Dillon, this is my first time here for dinner with the family as well. I’m dating Ruby’s older brother, Cody.”

“She’s makin’ him relaxed. Get her to stop,” Drake complained.

Dillon stepped through the door, and I closed it after him. “H-Hi,” Dillon said. He held the first bunch of flowers out to Ruby. “These are for you.”

Ruby blushed and took the flowers with a soft smile. “Thank you.” She turned
