out of it.”

I wasn’t even sure how I was going to face Zara, his mother, the next time I saw her. To go to a family dinner would surely send me crazy from the amount of fear that was already building.

“I’ll have to check my schedule.” God, I sounded lame.

“Angel, I’ll have your back.”

Shifting to capture his gaze, his gorgeous eyes anyone would fall into, I said, “I’m not good with a heap of people.”

“You own a bakery and see a heap of people all day.”

“In small intervals. This is dinner with your family. Your sisters, brother, father, and mother.” I scratched at my arm. “Look, I’m already breaking out in hives.”

He chuckled and took my hand in his. “Channa, I’m not talkin’ about tomorrow or the next day, but if this is goin’ where we’re seein’ each other all the time, I want you to know my family. They’re a big part of my life.”

They were. I knew this from the way he spoke about them. Though, he’d never said his mum’s name before.

“All right, Cody, but not too soon.”

He tugged me close and kissed the tip of my nose. “Okay, angel.”

Chapter Fifteen

Coyote

Without sounding like a total girl, I swore I saw sparks fly when I first touched my mouth to Channa’s. I’d wanted to take things slower, build up to it, but I couldn’t resist kissing her there and then. And even though it’d been a couple of days since that first kiss, and we’d shared other brief kisses, I still couldn’t get the first one out of my head.

Shit, how could I be so far gone when we hadn’t even taken the kiss from a small touch to one full of desire and heat? But I was, and I needed to change that soon. It didn’t help that we’d only seen each other once after dinner at my place.

My phone rang behind me, from where I stood looking out over the view Channa loved so much. I was supposed to be working, but I wasn’t focused. All I wanted to do was go to Channa and kiss her like I wanted. I had a need to take her mouth, to claim it.

Picking up my phone, I smiled at the name on the screen. “Angel.”

“Hey,” she whispered, and it put me on alert.

“What’s wrong?”

“What? Oh, nothing, but you said to call you when your, um, mum was in next. Actually, I’m surprised they’re in again so soon.”

I snorted. “Probably want to pry outta you what you’ve been up to. I’ll be there in ten,” I told her.

“Bye,” she uttered and ended the call. I quickly grabbed my keys and bolted out of there like my arse was on fire. I hadn’t confronted Mum and her posse yet, and I was looking forward to doing it. On the drive, I imagined many ways about what to do and say. In the end, I strolled up to the front door and opened it. My eyes landed on Mum, Clary, and Julian right away.

Channa stood at their table with a flushed face. Julian was the first to notice me. He let out a squeak, gripped Mum’s arm, and tried to drag her under the table.

With my arms crossed over my chest, I watched Mum fight Julian’s hand away.

“What’s gotten into you?” she demanded.

Julian stood and walked behind Mum’s chair. Probably in the hope she’d save him from my wrath. Then again, he seemed like the innocent party since he was mouthing, “It’s her fault,” and pointing down at Mum.

“Zara,” Clary said, and I glanced there to see she’d also noticed me and looked a little pale.

Both Channa and Mum looked my way.

“Oh shit,” Mum muttered. She didn’t like to swear, but it was obvious she knew how much hell I was going to give her.

We had an audience, with a few customers, along with Denise and Stanley standing behind the counter.

Dropping my arms, I moved closer to the table. “Anythin’ you wanna say, Mum?”

“Well, you see, I found this lovely little bakery, and I can see you also did.”

I raised a brow.

“Now, Cody, it’s not what it looks like,” she tried.

“And what do you think I think it looks like?” I asked before turning to Channa and smiling. “Hey, babe.” I leaned in and kissed her cheek while winding my arm around her waist.

“Hi,” she replied, a little too high.

Smirking, I shifted my gaze back to the three nosey people. “Clary, I remember askin’ you not to say anything.”

“Will you look
