Coyote (Hawks MC Next Generation #1) - Lila Rose Page 0,54

head, I told him, “Good doesn’t do it justice.” Walking over to the counter, I couldn’t help but run my hands over the smoothness.

When I glanced up, Cody was watching my hands through hooded eyes. While I didn’t have much experience, I thought I saw heat in the depths of his gaze. Interest.

Oh wow.

Was it for me or his counters?

His gaze rose and didn’t change. I swallowed thickly. “Um, dinner?”

“Yeah,” he said lazily. “Dinner.” When he turned to grab some plates, I took in a shuddering breath and blew it out.

Maybe Cody didn’t just want to be friends with me. That thought had my head spinning, my heart racing, while a sweet little tingle throbbed in my pussy.

Could Cody and I be more?

As I watched him dish up two helpings, I couldn’t help but think about how much I’d enjoyed getting to know him over the last few weeks. We’d gotten closer for sure, and I liked the direction our friendship was taking. And while I’d be happy if life stayed as it was, if the heat I thought I saw when he cast his gaze my way was real, then I wanted to explore that.

“Here you go, angel.” He slid the plate across to me and picked his up. “Did you want to stay at the counter you love so much or eat on the couch?”

Another blush crept forward. “I don’t mind.”

He chuckled. Nodding to the stools where I stood, he said, “Sit. We’ll eat here and then watch a movie, yeah?”

“Sounds good.” Once I was seated, I took a forkful of beef and black bean.

“Glad you suggested Chinese. Hadn’t had it in ages.”

“I love this place, so I hope you do too. But next time, I’ll cook that filet mignon with flavoured beans and scalloped potatoes I raved about a few days ago.”

“Deal.” He grinned.

We ate in comfortable silence for a bit. Until I remembered something I wanted to mention to him. “I’ve been meaning to tell you. Clary was in the bakery again and she’s given me the name of another baker since all those others didn’t work out.” They’d been terrible. Some in attitude, but others, when I’d given them a trial, even for a couple of days, were useless. I honestly didn’t know if their references gloated just to get rid of them.

When Cody didn’t say anything, I glanced his way and found he’d paused.

“Cody?”

“Clary’s been in the bakery?”

“Yes. Hadn’t I said anything before?”

“Nope. It’s good she’s helping you find someone, and I hope it’ll work out. We’ve both needed luck in that area.” Which was true. Cody hadn’t found a manager as yet either. I blamed his good looks when he’d said half of them had been women and weren’t really interested in anything to do with bikes. I’d figured they’d been too keen to get into his jeans or on the back of his bike. Just thinking of it again sent my stomach dropping. Cody caught my attention when he asked, “But can you tell me if she’s had others with her?”

“Yes,” I said hesitantly.

He groaned, placing his fork on the plate to scrub a hand over the back of his neck. “Do you know who?”

“Um, yes.” I nibbled on my bottom lip, unsure if I should tell him since he seemed to be getting worked up about it.

“Who?” he clipped.

I pushed my plate away and straightened my shoulders. “I’m not sure if I should tell you. It’s obvious you’re getting annoyed by something.”

“Oh, I am. But it’s better you tell me so I can wring her neck.”

“Whose?’ I demanded.

He took a breath. “Angel, I promise no harm will actually come to them.”

I studied him, and he seemed more relaxed. “Okay, but I don’t understand what the big deal is. They’ve been nothing but nice to me. They even walk Mrs Brickston home when she’s in when they are.”

He nodded.

“All right, well, there’s Clary, Julian—” He groaned. “—and Zara.”

“Fuckin’ fuck,” he cursed.

“What’s wrong with them?” I snapped, standing and putting my hands to my hips.

“Nothin’s wrong with them. Except their meddling ways.”

My brows dipped. “I don’t understand.”

Reaching out, he took my hand and guided me forward. Between his knees.

Oh dear.

My nipples hardened at the close contact, ready and waiting for attention. Down, girls.

“Babe…” He snorted and dropped his head forward onto my shoulder where he shook it. When he straightened, he smiled, and I noticed in this position, we were the same height. “Can’t fuckin’ believe them.”

“I mean, I know Clary had worked
