between Mum and Dad.

“Dad, it’s not my business to share.”

He studied me for a moment with a scowl on his face. His brows shot up. “It’s Maya. Fuck, is Maya thinkin’ of movin’ out?”

“I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about.” Fuck me, I was going to have to call my sister as soon as I was out of here.

“She is. Motherfuckin’ hell. She can’t. She’s only twenty-one.”

“Nearly twenty-two. I would have been gone around the same age if Mum hadn’t guilted me into stayin’ longer.”

He nodded and ran a hand over his face. “Yeah, I get that. Maybe Kitten’ll talk Maya into stayin’ longer.” He stood and started for the door. “Get some rest.”

“Where are you goin’?”

“To talk to my woman.”

Jesus Christ. Maya was going to kill me.

“Get some rest,” he ordered again, shutting the door behind himself.

Quickly, I pulled my phone out. Maya answered after the third ring. “Hey, bro. Dad said you had to stay around and watch out for the woman who helped Texas out, how’d it go?”

“Good, but no time for that. I fucked up, Doc.”

She sighed. “What did you do?”

“I didn’t say anythin’, but apparently Dad can read me and somehow he knows you’re thinkin’ of movin’ out.”

A pained groan dropped out of her. “Oh God. War has come.”

“You’re overreacting a bit.” I cringed, knowing that she probably wasn’t.

“Really?” she snapped. “Really? I’m overreacting? What about when Dad spoke to the basketball association because he thought our shorts were too short? Or when he didn’t want me to go to uni? Then there was the time Dad nearly choked my first date as he threatened him to keep his hands to himself. How about when Dad tried to ground me for wearing a summer dress? When Dad—”

“I get it. Dad’s a little overprotective.”

She snorted. “Yeah, okay, we’ll go with a little. He’s as protective with me as Mum is with you. It’s like they talked about this before we grew up and decided which child they’d protect more. Mum’s cool with things I do when Dad isn’t, and it’s opposite for you.” She groaned again. “I’m going to be living at home until I’m thirty.”

“Shit, sorry, Doc.” Though I couldn’t help but smile since I was a bit protective of my sister as well. Her shorts for basketball had been too short; I’d heard guys talking about them. Plus, her first date was a douche, and I’d wanted to punch him on first sight.

“You’re not sorry. I bet you’re smiling crazily right now. You’re nearly as bad as Dad. I’ll get payback. You know that, right?”

Fuck. “Yeah, I do.”

She cackled. “Good.”

“Now, tell me the verdict on Texas.”

She sighed. “Besides the bruises and cuts all over him, he has four cracked ribs.”

“Damn. Did you and him talk—”

“I’ve got to go. Talk soon, bro.”

I snorted. It was like that as soon as I brought anything up between them. “Yeah, yeah. Good luck with Dad,” I teased.

“Screw you,” she snarled and then ended the call. I couldn’t help but laugh. But in the end, if she needed me to speak to Dad about her moving, I would. I’d help any of my family out when they needed it.

Chapter Six

Channa

I hated my early mornings even more now.

It’d been a week since things had happened and I was still living at Stanley’s. The Hawks MC were still protecting me, and they still hadn’t heard from the gang leader for things to be settled. The only plus side was that nothing else had happened. From what I knew, no one suspicious-looking had been by my place or the bakery.

What had turned my early morning from mild irritation to hate was how I got to work. It wasn’t on my own. Oh no, I wasn’t allowed to. I had to be transported to and from work by a Hawks MC member, and in the mornings, it was always, always Cody and Ruin.

Ruin was fine; he was a jokester and was always flirty and sweet, yet there was a seriousness beneath the surface.

It was the other man who rattled me in ways I hadn’t been before. He watched a lot, was quiet, yet spoke when he felt it was necessary. He even sometimes asked questions, but it was his proximity that drove me nuts. He seemed to always be in the way, specifically because in the mornings, they refused to stay outside when I was on my own in the bakery in case someone came in from the back. No, they wanted to
