Coyote (Hawks MC Next Generation #1) - Lila Rose Page 0,20

coyotes were cunning and smart, it stuck and became my club name as well.

Yet, to Mum, I would only ever be her Cody. She wasn’t my real mother, but I saw her as more of a mum than the biological one. Honestly, Zara was the best. It was she who made me want to find that someone special in my life. What my parents had together was strong and damn kickarse. Yeah, they fought and teased, but they loved each other something fierce.

“Hey, Mum,” I said against her temple, where I kissed her as well. “How’s Ruby and Drake?”

She slapped my arm. “How about you pop into the house and find out? It’s been too long since you’ve come for a family dinner.”

“It’s been three weeks since I’ve come home.”

“Three weeks, Cody. Three weeks. That’s three family dinners you’ve missed.”

“How about I promise to come to the next ten… when this stuff is over?”

She narrowed her gaze. “Ten?”

“Ten.”

She turned to Talon. “When will all this, whatever it is, be over?”

“In a week or two hopefully.”

She grinned. “Okay. I better go anyway. I have another meeting at the high school for Drake.” She kissed my cheek, went to Talon and gave him a quick peck on the lips, which he didn’t seem happy with since he pulled her into a longer one. Something I turned away from because when it was your parents, you just didn’t need to see that shit. With a laugh, she waved to Ruin and left.

After she was out of earshot, Ruin and I gave a detailed report. It was probably too soon for any of the gang members to show up for retaliation, which was why we’d have to be vigilant from now on.

“Are you two good to do the morning shift? Get her to work at three?” Talon asked.

“Works for me,” Ruin replied.

I nodded. “I’m good.”

“Griz and Stoke will be taking over from Killer and Vicious, so you’ll be on after them.” He was telling us so we knew who we had to look out for. “Go get some rest, Ruin. Coyote, want a word.”

“I’m out. Coyote, I’ll meet you at your place and we’ll ride together, yeah?”

I tipped my chin up. “You got it.” When the door shut behind him, I faced Talon again. “What’s up?” I asked, shifting to sit in the seat opposite him and lifting a leg up to rest on my knee.

“Your mum’s worried about you. She only recently heard you broke up with Anna—”

I groaned. “Dad.” For me, whenever we were alone or at home, Talon was Dad, but in every other scenario, he was Talon. He understood why I called him Talon around the brothers. After all, it would seem weird if there was a situation and I was calling him Dad in front of everyone.

“Boy, you know how she gets. She thinks you’re down in the dumps about the break-up.”

“I’m not.”

“I know. I tried to tell her that and about how Anna moved on quickly, but she’s thinking Anna broke your heart and she wanted me to check on you.”

Laughing softly, I shook my head. “Honestly, I’m fine. More than fine. Anna wasn’t it for me. She wasn’t the one. You can tell Mum that. Business has just been busy. I’m still looking into openin’ another place in Melbourne. I didn’t realize three weeks had gone by without me being home.”

He nodded. “I get it. You’re young and got a shit-ton of things to do. I’ll try and get her to back off with the worrying.”

I snorted. “It won’t happen. We both know it.”

He grinned. “Yeah, we do. You still like living above the shop?” he asked. I’d moved above the Harley shop as soon as the second level got built a year ago.

“I do.” I smirked. “You can tell Mum that as well.”

He chuckled, leaning back on his chair. “Read right through that, huh?”

“Hell yes, because I know you’d know I’m fine living away from my parents at twenty-eight. You’d think she’d be used to it since I moved out when I was twenty-five.”

“That’s true. But she’s never liked any of the places you’ve lived because then you’re not home and protected.”

I winced.

“What was that look?” Dad demanded.

“What look?”

“Like you know somethin’ but don’t want to say it.”

Rolling my eyes, I asked, “You seriously got that from one look?”

“Boy, I know you. I know all my kids. What’s goin’ on?”

Shit. It wasn’t for me to say, and honestly, I wasn’t sure who’d be freaked out more
