the one to kick arse… it was hard to believe.

“Coyote, get the door,” Texas said.

Blinking, I nodded and went to the door, opening it. “Doc,” I greeted with a grin and leaned in to kiss my sister on the cheek. “Thanks for comin’.”

Maya rolled her eyes. “Don’t call me that.”

“But you’re our doc.” After Maya finished high school, she went straight to university to complete a three-year degree for a Bachelor of Paramedic Science. She was now on her year of working as a student paramedic. We were fucking proud of her.

I’d taken a different route to my career, and with my parents’ help, I opened up a Harley store. We sold, fixed, and did custom paint jobs, along with any type of decals customers wanted. I’d also been talking to a couple of brothers in Melbourne about opening a second shop.

“What we got?” she asked, stepping into the house. She paused when she saw Texas on the couch. I wasn’t sure what had happened between those two, but they hardly spoke. Then again, most of the time he was in Caroline Springs and Maya in Ballarat. It could be distance, but I had a feeling it was something else. No matter how many times I asked, both of them pretty much told me I was imagining things.

Maya sucked in a breath and moved right over to the couch after receiving a kiss on the forehead from our dad, Talon. I closed the door, and they went on talking quietly, explaining what had happened. They wouldn’t need me here for anything, so instead, I made my way through the living room and into the kitchen.

Only I paused when I turned the corner and found Channa with her ear up to the wall. Her eyes widened, and she stepped back, tripped, windmilled her arms, and then straightened with a blush on her cheeks and neck.

“I thought I heard a possum scratching in the wall,” she tried.

I wanted to laugh, even smile, but I didn’t because I didn’t want her to think she was stupid for doing it. Hell, I would have done the same if I was in her shoes with strangers in her house and not really sure what was going on or what we’d do to her.

Leaning against the wall, I crossed my arms over my chest. “Huh, I don’t hear anythin’.”

She mimicked me by crossing her arms over her chest. “Must have stopped. The dogs were going crazy over it.” I glanced down at the dogs who sat beside her, staring at me. “Well, they were,” she added.

I happened to glance at her feet, which were nearly damn blue. “Your feet are cold.”

Her brows dipped, and she looked down. “Crap.” She went to the pile of folded washing on the kitchen table and grabbed some socks. As she put them on, she explained, “I didn’t put shoes on when I heard the crash. I just rushed out there and—”

“Are your feet okay? Let me see,” I said and started to walk over to her, but she moved around the table to have it between us. She panted out her breaths, her eyes wild and a little panicky.

What the fuck?

“No, they’re fine. I’m good. It’s all good.” She nodded over and over. She let out a puff of air and then laughed. “See, all covered and getting warm. They don’t hurt.” She jumped up and down a bit.

Christ, she was weird, but in a funny way. I just didn’t understand why she didn’t want me near her. Unless she’d had a bad relationship or was in one now? The thought pissed me right the fuck off.

“You got a man?” I asked, a little harsher than I’d intended. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was taken. She was cute. Short, but cute in her light blue jeans and tee. Her hair was straight, sitting just past her shoulders, and red—a dark red that went well with her light hazel eyes. Freckles touched over her nose and upper cheeks.

Yeah, she was damn cute.

She snorted, then kind of wheezed. Maybe she couldn’t believe I’d asked. “No, ah, yeah, no. I don’t have time for that.”

It was good information to know since we’d have to have her back until we got those other fuckers off ours.

“Anyway,” she started, “um, how long until I can get to work?”

“Soon.”

“Okay,” she drew out. She went on to straighten things on the table and refold some clothes. I had a feeling she was nervous around me. “Do
