The Cowboy's Bride Bet - Holly Rayner Page 0,62

on the tension. “Your mother and I are just curious.”

Billie’s hand tightened around the water bottle. “I’m really excited about the miniseries, thanks for asking.”

Ginger’s lips pursed. “Billie. Don’t act like I’m attacking you.”

“I don’t have time to date.” Tension wound its way into her gut. “And it’s not important. I’ll meet someone when I meet someone.”

Her mother’s expression said everything. Not with that attitude you won’t.

Noticing water had spilled out of the water bottle and onto her hand, Billie forced her grip to relax. Her parents were almost unbelievably old-fashioned. It seemed they found it hard to believe that any woman could survive or even be happy without a husband.

The fact that millions of women did just that on a daily basis didn’t affect their opinion. They still thought a ring was the key to a fulfilling life.

Billie knew otherwise.

“Have you talked to Sandy yet?” Ginger asked.

“Yes. We’re meeting up in a little bit.”

The topic had been changed. For now, anyway.

“She joined that new dating app. What’s it called? The one where the girl makes the first move?”

Billie bit her bottom lip. Nope. Nothing had changed.

“I’m not sure.” She pulled her phone from her jeans’ pocket, pretending to have gotten a text.

Right then, the front door opened. A hipster couple in their thirties entered with two little girls.

“Katie!” Ginger cooed, going to kiss the woman on the cheek.

“Hey, Ginger.” The woman squeezed her hands. “Girls, tell Mrs. Eaves hello.”

The man said a quick hey to everyone, but his gaze lingered on Billie. “Do we know each other?”

“We might have gone to high school together,” she offered. He didn’t look familiar, but her high school had been a pretty big one.

“Matt, this is our daughter, Billie,” John said. “She’s visiting for a few days.”

Matt’s eyes widened. “Wait. I know where I’ve seen you. You were in that robot movie, weren’t you?”

“Oh. Uh, yeah. I was.”

The action film had come out about six months before. Billie’s part had been small, no more than six scenes, but the movie had done well at the box office. She’d been recognized a few times because of it, and it always felt weird.

“I knew it. That’s awesome.” Matt grinned big. “Katie, she’s in Rock Robots.”

“Oh, yeah?” His wife seemed less interested, though polite.

“And you’re gonna be in that new Western show, right?” He waved his hands in excitement. “Sorry. I’m way into Hollywood. I read the entertainment releases, like, every morning.”

“He really does,” Katie chimed in.

“Can I get a picture?” Matt was already pulling out his phone.

Billie blinked at the request. Though she’d been recognized before, this was the first time someone had wanted a picture taken with her.

“Sure,” she said.

Matt came to stand next to her, while Billie’s dad snapped away.

“The whole family is in entertainment,” Ginger said, “though Billie is the star.”

Billie’s face warmed. Leave it to her mother to suddenly gush about Billie’s career once there was someone to impress. She hadn’t even been interested in the Western till now, with the exception of how the show affected Billie’s hair.

“It was good meeting you,” Billie told the family. “I do have to run. My sister and I are meeting up on her lunch break.”

“You, too. Thanks for the pics.” Matt went in for a handshake.

“See you at the house,” Billie told her parents.

It seemed she couldn’t escape the studio fast enough. Stepping back out into the humid summer day, she unlocked the rental car and dropped into the driver’s seat. Little more than an hour in Louisville, and she was already questioning the trip home.

She loved her parents. They were good people. Still. There were… things that she didn’t enjoy so much.

Okay, there was really only one thing. If they’d get off her back regarding dating, everything would be fine. She’d enjoy her visits home a lot more, and the three of them would no doubt get along better.

But you couldn’t change people. She’d learned that long ago. The best you could do was accept them and be grateful for the good parts of their personality.

Speaking of good personalities…

A smile already stretching her lips, Billie headed out of downtown. Time to go see her favorite person in the whole world.
